Lunch in Oklahoma City
Any suggestions for something not too far off of I-35? We're traveling from Houston to Denver. Nothing dressy/fancy, we're just looking for something good to eat. Money not an issue, just has to be good and casual.
Thanks so much :-)

Where are you going to stop for the night. It's 7 hours to OKC and another 11 to Denver, CO. Would you rather stop on the S side of OKC or the N side. If you leave Houston, TX early you could have lunch on the N side past the major traffic in OKC. Let me know.

re: Littleman
I think we're spending the night in Burlington, Co. We're leaving here no later than 5 AM so OK City will be perfect for lunch. We're on our way to Alberta and need to be in Edmonton in 3 days but we're used to long driving days. It's just nice to have a decent meal when that's all you're going to do other than drive for 15-16 hours :-) I put Denver in there because that is the where we will turn north for Alberta.
North side would be fine too, we grab a danish at Collin St Bakery in Corsicana so lunch can be as late as 1:00 or so.

Norman, OK is 20 miles S of OKC. The traffic is much less in this area. Get off I 35 at Exit 108 A in Norman, OK and go E on W Lindsey Street to Legend's Restaurant for good family food for lunch. Legend's is less than a mile from I 35. If you want classic diner food in a hurry stop at Classic 50's Diner just before you get to Legend's. If you have time after lunch drive E on Lindsey a few blocks to University of Oklahoma and say hello to the Sooners.

North of OKC get off I 35 at Exit 141 and go W on Edmund Road 4 miles to Steve's Ribs and Grill for good road food for lunch or dinner. Four miles may seem far but it's a straight shot for good food. It's easier than getting off downtown. However Cattlemen's Restaurant is probably the best road food in or around OKC.

Get off I 70 at Exit 159 in Hays, KS and go S on Vine Street to W 27th Street. Take a right and go 2 blocks to Main Street. Take a left by the cemetery and go to Rooftop Restraurant and Lounge for oustanding lunch or dinner. Get off I 70 at Exit 17 in Goodland, KS and go N on Commerce Road to 16th Street. I would stop at Crazy R's Bar and Grill for dinner and spend the night at The Holiday Inn Express in Goodland, KS. Crazy's closes at 9PM Mountain Time or 8PM Central Time. Don't forget you will be on Central Time in TX and OK. You may want to stop for dinner in Salina, KS or Hays, KS. Good luck.

re: Littleman
WOW! Thanks so much littleman. What a great selection!!! We travel through Colorado to WY and MT and points beyond a lot but usually go through Wichita Falls, Amarillo, etc so going through OK City is kind of new to us. We've traveled through there several times, just not at meal time.
Let me tell you about our discovery 2 months ago in Denver while heading to San Juan Island. Jack N Grill. OMG, best hamburger I've had in many years!!! We live in an area where good food is very common so when traveling we are often let down when selecting a restaurant. I'm finding that Chowhound is very helpful with avoiding mistakes in selecting restaurants.

Here's a great place in Denver. Do you live in Houston, TX. I live in MS. I have a cousin in Dallas, TX so I'm familiar with TX food. What's your favorite restaurants in your area.
I posted some great WY and MT restaurants for you on the Mountain States Board. Good luck. Thanks.

re: Littleman
Yes, live just outside of Houston. In my area, hands down is El Tiempo for mexican food. Their crab quesadillas are to die for. Fajitas are wonderful too. Excellent place all around. I only go to the one on Washington, there are two other locations I think. Italian, I like Grotto on Westheimer. Scampi Grotto is my favorite dish there. For cajun (which we are sorely lacking around here) I like Mardi Gras Grill or Boudreaux's. Pop on over to the Houston board next time you're headed through Houston. Things change fast around here so what is good this year may be not so great next year.
That Back Country Denver location is pretty close to the Jack N Grill. I love cold sandwiches (especially with cranberry on them) but my husband will only tolerate so much of it. We'll be well into Wyoming by lunch on the second day I think. We get up pretty early when traveling on the road. I'm going to check out your recs for that area.
If you live in MS, have you been to Paula Deen's in Tunica? We did not like it at all.

Texas.....Did you see this TEX/MEX I recommended above in Edmun, OK.
For outstanding Texas/Mexican food in Edmund and a little more convenient to I 35 get off I 35 at Exit 142 and go about 2 miles W on Danforth Road to Ted's Cafe Escondido for lunch or dinner. It's pretty convenient to I 35 N of OKC.

http://www.tedscafe.com/I appreciate the Houston recommendations. We go to Dallas a lot. Why are you going to Edmonton. You must have relatives there. I have a Canadian friend from there but he works in Yellow Knife now. He's a doctor that left Canada and went to Saudi then came to MS but left here for YK. Cold.
I love Texas. I may move there soon to be closer to my cousin in Lewisville. They have great food in Texas. I hardly get to Houston. Good luck to you on your trip. Be careful and arrive safe.

re: Littleman
I did see the Tex/Mex and am going to put it on my list.
I have a friend there. Her husband invited my husband to go hunting. I'm visiting my friend while they are in the woods.
Yukon is VERY cold. We drove to Alaska a little over a year ago and more than cold, it's desolate!!! You don't ask if a restaurant is good up there, you eat where you find something. You get gas every time you see a station and you'd better map your trip out carefully or it would be easy to find yourself sleeping in the car. You can drive a few hours without seeing another human.
It's already dipping a little below freezing where we are going (north of Edmonton just a little). They're hunting not far from Jasper.
Thanks so much for your recommendations. I'm going to map them all and then do a little more research on them and will let you know where we ate and what we thought of our meal. We rarely eat at night so lunch is important.
I love Texas too. I wasn't born here but I got here as fast as I could :-) I'm a cajun girl that's been here for 40 years next month.

re: texasredtop
My oldest son flew to Edmonton 3 times to hunt near Sangudo. He was there for 10 days last year. I flew to Calgary and drove to Jasper a few years ago. Elk were walking in the highway. I love Canada. The food is outstanding.
What part of LA are you from. NOLA is my favorite city. I went to Ole Miss and we play Tulane in NOLA tomorrow night. Good to meet you. Good luck and let me know how your trip went. You can email me at terrene (at) cableone (dot) net. Best wishes.

re: Littleman
Littleman, thank you so much for all of your suggestions. I had emailed my cousin to meet us for lunch before I posted but hadn't gotten a response so figured we would be on our own. The day before we left, she responded and wanted us to meet her at Nic's so that is what we ended up doing. Add Nic's to your list because it is some kind of good. The burgers are just awesome. It was a little bit of a wait but we were back on the road in about an hour and fifteen minutes and enjoyed a visit with my cousin.
There really wasn't much else memorable meal-wise during the trip except the gumbo I made for my Canadian friends :-)

re: texasredtop
I eat at Nic's about once a week. It used to be my little secret. Since the Oklahoma Today Magazine did an article about them and they were on Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives, the crowds can be a little crazy sometimes. I have found the best times to go are Monday or Tuesday about 12:30. A lot of people recommend getting there around 11:00 but so many are doing that now, it is better to wait for the first wave of customers to get through. It only has nine stoools at a counter, two tables that seat two a piece, and a new counter facing the front window with five stools for a total 18 seats. Nic serves breakfast from 7:00-10:00 am and burgers, fries, and a special such as pork chops, fried chicken, or meat loaf until 2:00 pm. There is not special on Monday or Wednesday. Stay away if you want to eat a low cholesteral meal.
