Rosso’s Gravenstein Apple Pizza (Santa Rosa Farmers Market)

Melanie Wong Sep 8, 2010 12:46 PM

At Saturday morning’s farmers market in Santa Rosa, I capped an excellent morning with a pizza from Rosso’s mobile wood-burning oven. “chocolateninja” recommended the seasonal special, Gravenstein apple pizza, $10.

Topped with Gravenstein apples, fontina, mozzarella, prosciutto, lemon oil, and basil, this was more top-heavy than the typical Rosso pie. Maybe a little too thick on the cheese for me, but it tasted great and the crust turned out good and charry. I especially liked the brightness and perfume added by the lemon oil.

And here’s a shot of the upskirt. Too charcoalized in the scorching, but I prefer this to an overly blonde crust.

Rosso also sells at the Sunday morning farmers market in Sebastopol and will off this as long as Gravs are available. Having heard rumors that Rosso Pizzeria was scouting in Marin County, I asked if a new location had been decided on yet. Rosso is looking to open a branch and at this point, it will probably be in Petaluma, not Marin.

Everything crossed here for you too! Are there any wood-fired pizza places in P-town? The mobile folks, Politano, are out of Petaluma but I can't think of any sit-down spots off the top of my head.

Central market has an oven. I hear the new Luma opening on First st (?) is going to be a wood-fired place. I know someone who has semi-firm plans to open one too, but that may be a year or two out. Would love to see Rosso here.

Re Petaluma wood-fired pizzas, LUMA is indeed open - 1st and G, in the Riverfront warehouse district...three or four pizza offerings as well as a full menu of wood-oven and non-oven stuff.

Well, more than a year and a half after our discussion, Rosso is almost ready to open in Petaluma. A few days ago I noticed that the website had already been updated for the new Petaluma branch (that's a first!), which will include a mozzarella bar. The website says that fresh cheeses will be made hourly from local curd.

I swung by yesterday to see how far along the build out might be at the Theater Square location. The crew were installing the fixtures and equipment and staff hiring is in progress. Today, the folks at Rosso said that the plan is to open mid-May, maybe on May 13 (Mothers Day) or 14.
