French for Friday

BackBayGirl Sep 8, 2010 07:03 AM

Hi folks. My mom is coming into town and she loves French cuisine. She lives up in Maine, so the selection she has is pretty much nil. At any rate, just looking for some ideas in Boston, Cambridge, Somerville or Brookline for French restaurants that you think are worth going to. We have done Petit Robert and Gaslight in the past so some place we haven't gone together would be good. I also don't wish to go to Mistral as I was there a few weeks ago. Some people suggested Pigalle & Hamersley's. I'd love to hear your ideas! Thanks!

Bistro du midi is another option.

Check out Pierrot Bistrot on Beacon Hill too ... I like it more in the winter time when that kind of rib-sticking fare appeals more, but it's solid and worth a look.

Sadly, the pied du cochon is no longer on the menu. I hope that's just a seasonal blip. I do like my piggy's feet.

La Voile is in Back Bay so if your moniker is also your location, it's a great choice: reasonable and definitely Frencyh (I'm mad about their sweetbreads).

i like Clio and Cragie on Main for more high falutin food, but i also like Pierrot but if you are considering bistrots, what about Brassarie Jo in the Colonade hotel.

All great suggestions! Has anyone been to Sandrine's at all? Just curious. Never been there and it's close to my house, but if there are better places to go, then that's fine too.

I was just going to recommend Sandrine's especially for lunch on a nice day. They have a great lunch menu. I went earlier this summer but haven't had dinner there in several years.

I've been to Sandrine's once for lunch. The Alsatian pizza was pretty good, but I wasn't really blown away by the rest of the menu and haven't been back.

Just saw there is a Groupon coupon today for Sandrines $20 buys $40 worth of food... If you haven't tried Sandrines this would be bargain way of trying it.

It doesn't get a lot of mention on this board but I have never been disappointed at Salts. IMO - Fine food, impeccable service, elegant but comfortable ambiance.

Brasserie Jo recently got a lot of good feedback. Classic french, not very expensive and nice service. I eat at the bar there and always have a good meal.

Actually, we did end up going to Sandrine's because it is close to my house and by the time we wanted to go to dinner, we didn't feel like T-ing anywhere. We had a delicious meal & I would definitely go back!

I'd be interested in what you ate. I've been underwhelmed the few times I've eaten there.
