You used to be able to get New York bialies at Wagshalls. It has pretty good deli, not New York deli mind you, but pretty good sandwiches (carry out only). I am also quite fond of their gingerbread men. They are imported from elsewhere, but they are yummy.

Wegman's (Fairfax is the one I go to) has a product labeled bialy. It is not what I am used to in NYC, far too thick and doughy, especially the center. They do have decent bagels though, it is the only place I can find my favorite, salt bagels. They also have a good variety of smoked salmons that they hand slice. They will let you taste them as well.

was this intended to be cryptic? as a nod to the undersupper nature of the endeavor?

Methinks you may have coined a term.

It think you're right Dennis....a new term. Wouldn't undersupper mean lunch? I like it....I'm going to ask my co-workers where we are going for undersupper!

If it were underground, people wouldn't be posting about it here, right?

              :-)

The first rule of undersupper club is you do not talk about undersupper club. :)

I read a new place opened in Bethesda called Uptown Deli. Anyone know anything?

Pappy, I think it's ABOUT to open, but the other day the owner said he was still awaiting the last of the permits.

The guy talks a good game, and certainly seemed to describe his mission and good deli, so I have high hopes...

This is a deli-challenged area. I've seen bialys at the Wegman's in Fairfax.

If you are serious about corned beef and pastrami, then Deli City in NE DC is great in the unlikeliest place. Get a combo sandwich. Mon through Friday until 5pm only. No longer need to pine for NY.

The 'fuhgeddaboudit' sandwich at Chutzpah (Fairfax) is outrageous. It is a concoction. If I had a picture of it, you'd run out right now and order one. But bring friends along because it is huge.

Chutzpah has bialys, though I'm no expert on those. I really like Chutzpah, but find in general it falls short of NY - though when longing for something it's good.

The Deli in Herndon and Fairfax is my favorite Italian deli in the DC metro area, followed by Italian Store in Arlington.

As I found out yesterday, Attman's in Baltimore is very good. My corned beef was incredible.

I hate to disappoint you but you are not going to find any great NY-style deli in DC. The place I go to to get my fill is Morty's...which is pretty good, not excellent, but it gets the job done. I have yet to see a bialay anywhere in DC. Whenever I visit my Grandma in Chicago I bring home 2 dozen bialays and freeze them.

If you are willing to venture out to the suburbs you can probably find better deli.

There are no great ny style delis in the dc area, only mediocre ones. The only place that is close in that has bialys on the weekends is Bethesda bagels. On the other hand, I very recently discovered that my local Giant (in a not notably Jewish neighborhood in Alexandria) has frozen bialys that aren't too bad. The topping is bland, but I was quite happy with it. It ain't Kossar's but then what is.
