Just had a nice meal at Upstairs. Which is the rooftop restaurant at the Kimberly hotel on 50th between 3rd and Lex. Very classy and retractable roof as well.

Pampano, on E 49th has a nice outdoor terrace on the second or third floor. Nice if you want to be outside but not sitting on the sidewalk. But if you want to be high up with a view, it's not the right place for you.

Check out Terrace in the Sky (www.terraceinthesky.com) on the Columbia campus; extraordinary views and very decent offereings. Less fancy is Sosa Borella (www.sosaborella.com) which is Argentinean/Italian. After the theater starts, it can be v pleasant and affordable (esp the SA wine offerings). BTW E's rec on Pampano is seconded here; great food and v nice view; not a rooftop, though.

I'm intrigued by Terrace in the Sky, can you provide a review? I went to Columbia several years ago but haven't heard about them opening a restaurant like this on campus. Is it in a new building? Thanks!

It's on top of Butler. Been there for over 30 years.

Well that explains it, I never had occasion to go over that way... Thanks.

I've been a couple of times and while the view is lovely the food and service are just so-so.

The Heights was my college era hangout. Burgers, etc.

I went with friends to the rooftop bar at 230 Fifth for our last night in NY in June. Beautiful evening, gorgeous views -- OK drinks and bar food. Nothing offensive, but nothing memorable either. Great if rooftop/views is worth a lot more to you than what you eat or drink.
