Bugs on my Romaine Lettuce
I always buy whole bagged Romaine Lettuce from my local grocery store.
Last week I had a bit left on a head so I wrapped it in a damp paper towel and stored in my fridge. When I went to use it I found small bugs, they almost looked like a cross between a fruit fly and a spider all over the lettuce.
So I quickly threw it down the sink in the shredder.
Yesterday I opened the re-seal bag to a COMPLETELY different bunch of Romaine Heads, and sure enough The bugs were all over them as well!
This was a completely different bag from a different store.
I’m very clean sometimes to clean! And I am so disgusted by this.
I’m scared to buy the whole lettuce again but love the flavor of Romaine.
Could you possibly help me in understanding, why, how and what these bugs are!
And how to prevent this again!
re: Scary Bill
Well thanks for that Scary Bill.
I was more curious as to how they got there, and how to prevent them from coming back.
They are not on any other of my veggies or fruits in the fridge, only the lettuce...
And they were not bought this way just seem to have grown on the lettuce....
I'm looking for a response thats a bit more helpful thanks!
Tracy, as the bugs are not on any other produce you have, the bugs were there when you bought the lettuce. And they appear to be specific to lettuce, as a consequence, as they did not spread. If you did not see them when you bought the lettuce, then you likely overlooked the eggs or larvae. Bugs do not spontaneously appear.
Solution #2 as you didn't like the first one: Don't buy lettuce.
I'm going to do another clean up in my fridge tonite.
I'm thinking aphids as well.
Must be something in the air. I have bought this product from both Costco & Safeway and they both have the little "buggers".
Never have encountered this before in my life. And I eat alot of veggies and salad!
Thanks for the help!
