Haven't been to Pincholine but I just ate the prix fixe at SHO and was unimpressed to say the least. The only good item was the summer corn soup while the mushroom pappardelle was gummy. I have had multiple delicious and memorable meals at the Modern. I've yet to eat anything that tasted bad there.

Having been to the 3 you mentioned a few times each I'd say it comes down to what you are trying to acheive because in terms of food they are all excellent. Without knowing more details I would immediately pick The Modern Dining Room because it's the best overall experience of the 3 AND the food is slightly more creative.

That brings it down to The Modern or SHO. Picholine is elegant and refined (but don't interpret that to mean stuffy). The Modern benefits from a great bar area and terrace for before dinner drinks, a beautiful view out on to the sculpture garden, and a very hip and upbeat design. During the daytime it can seem a bit too bright but when the sun goes down it's really a wonderful place. My vote still goes to The Modern. If you do book here ask for a table along the windows, much nicer than the tables near the bar room divider.

Haven't been to Picholine but have been to SHO and The Modern (dining room) recently, and for flavor, subtlety and wit the food at The Modern is best. I didn't find it noisy in the least - the bar area is, but not the dining room. The food at SHO is a lot of fun - the Dionysian opposite to the Appolonian Per Se - but I'd go back to the Modern before going back there.

Have not been to Picholine (can you believe it??) but have been several times to both SHO and The Modern. I'd say between those 2, it depends on the ambiance you're looking for. At The Modern, you have the beautiful view of the sculpture garden with a lively, loud crowd (you'll be shouting at each other to have a conversation). SHO is much more quiet, more of a high-end service experience, and I find the food and presentation more refined. Personally, between these two, I would pick SHO. Sorry that I can't compare it to Picholine for you.
