Just 3 days ago I threw out a glass and aluminum sugar jar because I simply could not get the top off. (It was the classic mini-garbage-can shaped kind, with a little loose aluminum flap for pouring.)
Not an expensive thing, but I wish I had thought of holding the top under hot water. I'll bet the aluminum top would have expanded WAY faster than the glass, and it would have come right off. I somehow got the threading askew and it was STUCK. -

Wouldn't that also cause the metal of the upper pan to expand, wedging it in tighter?
I would think you float the bottom one in hot water (or over a low heat burner, and fill the top one with ice, water and rock salt.. one expands, one hopefully contracts, and you get them apart..
