Quite good Moroccan in the Potsdam/Canton area

We live in the San Francisco Bay area and enjoy good food. For the past three years we have been coming to Canton, New York to visit our daughter in college. Until this September, we really haven't found anything we would heartily recommend. On this trip, we went to La Casbah one night and had to go back the next. The lamb tagine was very flavorful, as I suspect the other tagines would be. We also had the shrimp kebabs, which were grilled perfectly with the dry spice marinade getting just a little crusty, but the shrimps still holding a nice texture. The portions were quite generous, certainly more than you expect in the Bay Area. They had a nice selection of reasonably priced wines. Prices overall were quite reasonable, for a very good price/quality ratio.

The menu offer some other dishes, but we stuck with the Moroccan side of the menu.

They have a website:

  1. Sounds like it's time for a road trip from Syracuse.

Sergi's on Main St. in Canton used to be good. I haven't been there in a few years but a couple of other people I know from that area said it is. Also, The Hotel Grande in "downtown" Norfolk (Rte. 56 on the way to Massena) is also pretty good and worth the trip.

I'd add Emerald Isle in Brasher Falls to the short list of places with decent eats in that region.

    2. Thanks for that link. I grew up in Massena (and my HS sweetheart went to SLU) but have lived in San Francisco for the past 48 years. I'll be in the North Country for a week or so before Thanksgiving and looking for eats to try (especially ethnic OR regional).

A thread from last year mentions a hole-in-the-wall in Canton called Leonies Jamaican Cuisine. Is it still there, and have you tried it?

FWIW, Gary Danko is from Massena, and his first exposure to restaurant work was at The Village Inn in Massena. It was THE place to eat 50 years ago, though I have no idea if it is any good now.

Unfortunately, the owner of Leonie's was arrested for selling cocaine. I was told the food was good there, but he one time I went, it was closed, even though the sign said it was a normal business hour.

Massena and Gary Danko! Thanks for the info.

      2. Thanks for all of the posts on this topic.
We rarely see any posts about this area ---and we live near here and we feel that the Clipper Inn(seasonal) in Clayton is about the best eating in the area.
Now we have somewhere else to venture to!

My little sis lives in Clayton. How is Foxy's in Fishers Landing these days?
