Chow mein like the old Far East Cafe?

Took my mom to New Flavors Chinese on Centinela for some Chinese food. It's an okay place and the folks who run it are nice. Mom had a hankering for chow mein and admittedly their chow mein wasn't very good. Mom is a fan of the chow mein from the old Far East Cafe. I got some from the Formosa Cafe that Dewey (from the old Far East) back when he was still around. Anybody know of anything like that around (preferably the mid-city/west L.A. area)? I vaguely recall Kim's in the old Crenshaw Square used to do an okay version, but that was many years ago.

  1. Most places serve Hong Kong style chow mein. Crispy noodles with lots of gravy. Ask for soft noodles rather than Hong Kong style and it'll be the old fashion Far East Cafe way.

    1. I've never tried it but I can only imagine that Paul's Kitchen (and OLD school Chinese restaurant) would do the sort of version that you are looking for: http://losangeles.menupages.com/resta...

      1. Kim's is still in business in Crenshaw Square, though I don't know if the management is the same. Another possibility is Bamboo Inn just east of MacArthur Park at 2005 W. 7th St., which is a 50s-60s time warp.

Thanks for the ideas. Not too sure how to go about getting mom her choice. I'm not too crazy about some of these places (in general for food). I don't think I want to make all this taste testing extensive. I do appreciate your help.

You don't have to go to an old Chinese American place to get old fashioned chow mein. Just order it soft noodles at Sam Woo or any Cantonese place.
