california rolls,born in van?

heard a vicious rumor that cali rolls were a van invention ,tis true?

  1. well partly true as local folklore goes , as Tojo claims to have invented the "inside outside" roll of which the cali roll is

      edit, the folklore is not regarding if Tojo actually said vit, i saw him on tv claiming it, it is regarding the truthfullness of the claim

        (Not that Wikipedia entries are any more reliable than Tojo's own claims):

        "In the 1960s, Los Angeles became the entry point for sushi chefs from Japan seeking to make their fortune in the United States. The Tokyo Kaikan restaurant then featured one of the first sushi bars in Los Angeles. Ichiro Mashita, a sushi chef at the Kaikan, began substituting avocado for tuna (toro) and after further experimentation, the California roll was born"

    2. further , what Tojo says is that he was the first to put rice in the outside of the roll, therefore he claims to have invented that whole style of roll

            I recall that Tojo says he invented that one too.
