E-mail spam related to CH

  • 9

The e-mail address on my profile is not the one I use with friends or for online shopping, and doesn't get much spam. Usually it's clearly money scams from overseas. Today I received spam that came direct to that e-dress's inbox, entitled "Bobby Brown the Mixmaster Cooking Show". It must track back through Chowhound. The other spam that comes to that e-dress is almost always routed directly into it's spam folder. I hope our addresses are not being sold.

I'm with you on that, hmmmmm. Needless to say my CH profile has been edited.

    2. I haven't recieved that email and since 2002 I have never received one piece of Chowhound related spam.

Are they a chow parterner? If you click on the newsletter link in your profile do you have the chow partener email checked?

You do list your email address on your profile, so some sceen scraping or an ambitious marketer could have collected it that way. I have mine on my profile, but with a note that I won't answer it unless there is something about Chowhound in the title.

I only have the Boston Digest clicked in the newsletter link section, and that comes to a different e-dress than the one on my profile. I get a lot of foodie-type mail on that different e-dress and have given that address to food-related sites. I get plenty of spam on that e-dress, but it's the usual debt/sex/pharmacy type stuff that everyone gets. I can't recall getting any spam that is clearly foodie-related on that e-dress. I started this thread to see if other 'Hounds are getting the same piece of spam. If, as you say, my profile e-dress was "scraped", I can't be the only one.

Yes but your last sentence implied Chow was selling addresses. Someone picking up your address from your profile and Chow selling addresses are two different things.

I'm just saying I think it is totally unlikely on Chow unless you request that iinfo by checking whatever boxes.

Chow can confirm this, but it is a long weekend and the SF staff might not be looking at posts.

It's also possible that some smart food marketing person (really not an oxymoron) picked your address off your profile and direct marketed to you. I think marketing people are getting a lot smarter about target marketing their stuff to users of blogs and discussion sites. Once they figure out where some people keep their email addresses publicly available, it's pretty easy to have some low-paid intern spend a couple of days working on a list.

        2. The email addresses some users voluntarily enter on their profile page aren't collected by us, or used by us in any way. The only addresses contained in our database are the one users enter when you sign up, and which can be updated on your Profile | Settings page.

If you're receiving email at the address you use in your profile page, and it's a different one than you have registered with us, it's not coming from us.

So, does Chow.Com, A CBS Interactive Division sell those addresses in the Chow.com database to "partners"?
