Allium-More precious than Wheatleigh

a

Went with some friends after the movies the other night. We got a number of appetizers, and, the portions were more precious than they are at Wheatleigh. We felt we did not get value for the money. Portions do not have to be huge, but, they should at least be more than two bites. I am not a big eater, but, I DID leave hungry and after having eaten many more French fries than I should have. Pearl's had similar ambience, and, in the bar there, one could get either dinner or the bar menu. And, there were really wonderful SUBSTANTIAL salads on the Pearl's menu. Allium's menu is quite limited and disappointing.

As a resident of the area, I have found Allium to be hit or miss. I belive they thrive because Pearls is now gone and Allium happens to be right next door. I never hear anyone rave about it, its just there where a restaurant needs to be. Last time i was there I had fish. It was good but I would have liked a little more. My husband had duck cassoule and it was awful. I told him to send it back but of course that is easier said than done

My favorite thing after a 6:00 movie USED to be a sandwich, salad, etc. with a martini in the bar at Pearl's...and...you could just watch the world go by sitting in the window there. Well, Friday night, a few of us were trying to recreate that experience...we sat on the sofa in the front of Allium. The last time I was there was a year and a half ago because it was such a rip-off last time. Well, guess what...until I hear that they have improved, I shall not go there any time soon.
Next time, since I would be heading north anyway, I'll persuade friends to go to the bar at the Red Lion...they have a good menu, and, you CAN get dinner items in the tavern. And, also, a wonderful chicken Caesar, twice the size of any salad at Allium.

I just checked Trip Advisor to see if anybody else feels the same way I do...They ALL do. It is a shame because Allium COULD be a good dinner OR after the movies kind of place if the powers that be took seriously the current perception of the place.

I don't mind the portion sizes at Allium but they are definitely smaller than most similar restaurants. The food has the potential to be good, but I was there tonight and the burger bun was stale (crumbly) and there was a mysterious charge on my bill - a random $11 without any itemized description - when we asked about it the waitress immediately removed it, so fast that it made me wonder. Explanation: "our computer" - really? 2011 and your "computer" adds an unexplained charge to an otherwise highly itemized and accurate bill? Hmmmm. Not sure how I feel about going back again.

Or, after a movie, one COULD go to Cafe Adam, a five minute drive from Railroad Street. I feel Cafe Adam is the best in Great Barrington.
