Kitchner: Help us Chowhounds, you are our only hope!

  • 7

We are Vancouver foodies visiting family in Kitchner in early October for four days and were wondering if there are any hidden gems in this area. We are omnivores and would enjoy anything from a good greasy spoon to ethnic eats to fine dining. Any recs in this area?

  1. Taste of Philly Cheesesteak at 98 King St. W is excellent, definitely a huge step above regular fast food. Good place for lunch. Grab a large cheesesteak with either cheddar or provolone and add either pickles or banana peppers, keep it simple and delicious.

You should also make sure to visit the St. Jacobs Farmers Market. It is touristy and there are a lot of junk vendors. However, there is also excellent local produce, cheeses, meats and bread to be had.

    1. 2nd the Taste of Philly recommendation for a delicous cheesteak sandwich. Nothing I have tasted in Toronto (or even Philly) comes close! (OK...Jim's in Philly- close)

Two Goblets on Weber for Schnitzel, cabbage rolls, and other Romanian specialties.

Cameron seafood on Charles is KW's best chinese IMHO, but I'm guessing Van has much better (Toronto does too)

Would also recommend Bogey's Rustic Grill in Pioneer Park plaza. Looks like a roadhouse but the food is much more... Kobe beef (ONT) poutine, great burgers (blue, jerk, lamb, buffalo, kobe) seafood nachos, fresh cut fries...

If you are a fan of U.S. style "BBQ", Camp 31 (Alabama style) in Paris is a short (less than an hour?) drive, and in the opposite direction, enjoyed the pulled pork and brisket at Hog Tails BBQ in Waterloo (more Carolina style?)

      Good Luck!

      1. I highly recommend Uptown 21 for fine dining. Bistro atmosphere. Food is fabulous. Prices are reasonable, in my opinion.

Note that "Bacon, FREE... just because we love your decision." I added free bacon to my main, which was a very tender chicken and spaetzle. Went very well. Fun and delicious!!

        1. KW (Kitchener-Waterloo) Oktoberfest is Oct 8 thru 16! I'm new to the area so this will be my first year, but people here say it is not to be missed (if you like schnitzel, beer and lederhosen). You know German is the local ethnic tradtition when the town used to be called Berlin...

          1. I have no clue about the area, but as Dr LM points out, Kitchener means Octoberfest - the largest Bavarian festival in North America - thats gotta mean something...
