Where are the family-run, not $400 a meal restos in QC? Maybe even grass-fed locally-sourced meats?

(First off, I thank you in advance for replying to this post. I think this is the best site going for those who really care about food,)

We love Montreal and the abundance of well-priced, creative BYO restos. We'll be staying in QC for five nights and in doing my research, I can't seem to find a "Montreal equivalent." I haven't even found a restaurant that allows corkage.

Some of my most memorable meals have been in Montreal in establishments where the chef/owner is in the back cooking and the front of the house is covered by a family member, frequently his wife. (Hope that doesn't sound sexist...) We would always get into wonderful conversations with the family (even if our French isn't the best) and that experience was just wonderful.

Additionally, we've pretty much been eating only grass-fed, humanely raised meats and I'm not sure that's caught on there.

Anyone have any ideas?

Thank you again! Patty

You might want to look into Le Billig. Small intimate restaurant on St. Jean (outside the Walls, but not much) serving crepes and a few other items. Can't vouch for the progeny of the meats on the menu, but it was basically a two-person operation: the chef and one other very busy (but patient) working the front of the house. Maybe 10 tables total. Very tasty and memorable. Closed Mondays.

Okay, thanks for the clarification about the wine.

Still, are there any restos like what I experienced in Montreal?

We have the big and recommended ones, Le Pain Benji and Toast already reserved. I was just hoping to find something small, intimate, and special for the other three nights.
      Thanks...

Cafe du Clocher Penche is small-ish and cosy. L'Echaude is another favourite of mine.

There are no "corkage" fees in QC (the province).

Restaurants are either fully licensed, or fully "BYOB".

You cannot bring your own bottles in a fully licensed restaurant.

As for the rest, I don't know since most restaurants do not publicize their producers unless right on the menus; and then you have to be in.

        Max.

Just to clarify - are you looking for suggestions for Quebec City?

(FYI - QC is the abbreviation for the province of Quebec, so just want to make sure before you start getting suggestions.) Thanks!
