Eating local/organic in NDG

My husband and I have just moved to Montréal and I am having a hard time finding organic and fair trade products. Does anyone know of a good place to go for that kind of thing?

Also, I recall reading something about food baskets that can be ordered from local farms. Does anyone know anything about those (such as when they are available, cost, etc.)?

Thanks so much!

Welcome! Some places to explore in NDG:

Coop La Maison Verte - http://www.cooplamaisonverte.com/
    - aside from being a fair-trade/organic store, they have various CSA's (the farms you refer to) that sell produce to the public on certain days of the week - check the schedule with the Coop

Mondiana Grocery - southeast corner Sherbrooke W. & Cavendish (lots of organic)

    Ecollegey - http://www.ecollegey.com/ (organic)

Fleur Sauvage - http://www.fleursauvage.ca/ (natural-foods store, lots of organic)

A Votre Santé - 5126 rue Sherbrooke O (natural-foods store, lots of organic)

myAntidote - http://www.myantidote.ca/ - fairly new organic grocery store on Sherbrooke, also sells online & serves meals in the store/bistro

Big list of CSA's with delivery neighbourhoods listed. Contact each farm for details: http://montreal.about.com/od/shopping/a/mtl_food_basket.htm

Equiterre - association that lists local CSAs & has lots of info on fair-trade (French only): http://www.equiterre.org/

It's likely too late to get a share in the summer/fall basket, but some farms do winter baskets.

    Hope this gets you started!

Oh, I should also add that there's an outlet of Ten Thousand Villages on Monkland, and they have a section with fair-trade foods like coffee, chocolate, sugar, etc.

And Loblaws (St-Jacques & Cavendish) has a fairly big selection of organic stuff now, too - both produce and other goods in the "health food" aisle.

My pleasure. I'd love to know what you think once you've had a chance to check some of them out!

If I am not mistaken, I think Ten Thousand Villages has closed (or at least moved).

They're still on Monkland, but on the north side of the street - still very much open, next to the kitchen store.

Update: myAntidote appears to be closed now. There's a for rent sign up in the window and the place looks barren. I guess business wasn't going so well? Strange, they were only there for a short time. Unfortunately I never got a chance to visit them.

I'm not surprised - their products were very expensive, especially compared to most of the other organic/fair trade options around, and they had a very limited selection. The space was also too small to really be an eat-in café/resto and they only had a couple of tables. It wasn't very welcoming a space. I was excited when they first opened but I ended up only going to eat there once.
