65th Birthday not too far from Reston?

  • 4

I live in LA, but I'm coming into NoVa to take my mom out for a 65th birthday dinner. I'm looking for someplace within 40 minutes of Reston, rather than the city. My mom's the kind of gal who generally just orders whatever on the menu looks most like plain roast chicken, but she'll still want someplace with a "special occasion" vibe for the evening. Normally we'd go to L'Auberge Chez Francois, but they're closed on Mondays, which is when her birthday is. So any suggestions for a conservative eater who still wants to feel like dinner is a special event? Given the importance of the birthday, I'll splurge on the bill, so price isn't too much of an object.

Thanks for any help!

  1. Been thinking about this one. The easiest is PassionFish if she's okay with seafood. There are some other nice places in Reston, but I fear they'd fall short of what you're after. And anyway - if she lives in Reston she may either know about them or go (Thinking El Manantial, Ice House Cafe, or some of the other places in RTC).

But, if I were you, I'd seriously consider Lightfoot in Leesburg. I *think* they have a chef's table if you want to go that route. I think you can at least tell them you'd like a nicer table, etc.

    1. I've never been here, but have heard wonderful things about Bazin's on Church, in Vienna. I just checked their menu and there are some approachable but still delicious-looking entrees.

      1. Bazin's used to be a favorite for us, but a recent lunch was very disappointing in a number of ways.

        We've always enjoyed Lightfoot.

        1. Trummers in Clifton has been getting good buzz from the Chowhounds here. I haven't been yet. Clifton is almost due south of Reston, maybe 20 minutes or so.
