Prestos, Jersey City
Made our way up to JC yesterday for our daughters birthday. Was hoping for a place within walking distance to her apartment and we got lucky :)
Her choice was Prestos, a real throwback to JC red sauce Italian. The place is small and a bit dingy, the wait time for a table can be horrendous but the reward is really good old fashioned food at very attractive prices.
Got there early enough (6:00) to snag the table for 4 in the window area. Portions are large and we shared everything between the 4 of us. Menus are under the glass table top, all your favorites are listed. There is also a small list of specials handed out.
Apps were crispy fried calamari, hot antipasto for two and bruschetta. All were very good, the antipasto was a standout with the stuffed clams, stuffed mushrooms, shrimp, mussels and eggplant rollatine.
Entrees were pasta bolognese, penne carbonara, chicken francese and chicken parmigiana. All were excellent and the kitchen is under the watchful eye of grandma who is the owner of the recipes.
I have heard that service can be hectic when really busy but we had great service and a relaxing meal. Prestos is BYO which makes it even a bigger bargain. We enjoyed a 2008 Pinot Noir and a 2004 Turley Zinfandel, the Pinot was our sons first California vintage.
For some nice red sauce Italian food, Prestos is hard to beat. No website but here is a link to that menu under the glass table top.
199 Warren Street
i have friends on warren st and have eaten at presto's a few times. it was very good years ago. tasty and reasonably priced. i have no clue about ownership but i ate there about 6 months ago and while i won't say it was terrible, it certainly is not worth a return visit. it was basically pizzeria food without the pizza. pass.
