Tokyo Area - Do shinise shops still exist here?
I've been treated to a friend's details of her visits to Shinise shops - traditional Japanese shops where families have carried on traditional methods for years to create such wonderful items as confectioneries, Zen wheat gluten products, roasted tea, tsukemono, natto, and shoyu. I wondered could it be possible in the bustle of Tokyo, or perhaps in one of the outlying areas, such wonderful shops could have survived? We will be taking day trips across the bay to Chiba to go up the ropeway to see the largest stone-carved Daibutsu in Japan at Nihon-ji at Nokogiriyama and also to Nikko. Information on traditional, family-run restaurants in these areas would also be appreciated.
