Wood Tavern lunch and young kids?

  • b

Would you take young (3, 6) kids to Wood Tavern? (They'd be outnumbered by adults.) I'm thinking about the atmosphere and expectations of other patrons rather than menu. We'd go at lunch time but I'm wondering what the other patrons are like. Our kids are well-behaved (and we'd take them outside if they played up) but I wouldn't want to kill the ambience for anyone either.

I noticed an old SFGate story that mentioned kids are 5% of the clientele...

Thanks!

  1. I see kids there all the time, and I think at lunch it would be fine if the kids are well behaved. It's a pretty loud restaurant anyway, so I don't think that the kids will disturb anyone.

Yes, if your kids are pretty well behaved and not prone to running around the restaurant, it would probably be fine. Anyway, there are a lot of families in Rockridge, so I think they would try to accomodate especially in this economy.

    2. Are you saying that there will 3-6 kids + 4-7 Adults? Or where those the children's ages? If it is the count that is a pretty large group for the wood tavern space you should definitely have reservations.

...it's because I've never been to Wood Tavern and don't want to upset other guests :)

@chefj: 3 adults and two kids ages 3, 6. We ended up not being able to get lunch res so are going for a very early dinner. Thanks for the heads-up.

        2. I've taken our 2 kids (infant + 3 yo) there for lunch (and early dinner sometimes) on multiple occasions and it has been great. The owners (the Woods) have a new baby themselves and are very gracious and go out of their way to make you comfortable, as does their staff. It is plenty noisy so you don't feel uncomfortable if your kids make noise (my older one is a chatty kathy). And it is a pretty casual and diverse lunch crowd, so I wouldn't feel like you were breaking up any major business conversations.

My thinking is I'd rather have my kids grow up appreciating good dining establishments than to just standard "kid friendly" joints which so often don't have great food.

          1. If it's a nice day and the front door/windows aren't closed, there will be plenty of noise from both within the restaurant as well as from the traffic on College Ave and Claremont Ave outside. As long as your kids are well-behaved and not clumsy with silverware/dishes/glasses, I doubt any of the other patrons would raise an eyebrow.

Thanks again everyone. Regrettably, we had to cancel because a couple of us ran up against a scheduling snafu. But FWIW, the staff at Wood Tavern were utterly gracious about trying to work with our tight timing and then ultimately the last minute cancellation. I'm looking forward to trying to get there another time.

By the way, I was recently told by staff at WT that they have "kids seats" for the bar!
