-Vecchitto's Italian Ice, almost as good as New Haven's...Slurp and stroll by the river park
-Iguanas Ranas, tacos, etc, best mexican around these parts...ask for extra sauce
-Sammy's Pizza, (Italian) not so much for the pizza, but the food is awesome, very casual
-Fiore or Luce, (Italian) if you feel like spending more $$$, again, great food
-Mezzo Grille, great place for a cocktail, but food and service haven't been sorted out yet
    -Pizza? Still haven't found a decent pie around here...Maybe First&Last or Illianon's
-orourkes, meh, others here worship it, but I'm not into the whole "slumming it" scene, waiting outside with the dope fiends, hookers, and pan handlers

OK, BiscuitBoy, I'm happy to pitch in and play along:

      - HA HA HA, natives of 06457 firmly believe Vecchitto's is the best ice ANYWHERE!
      - Mezzo, v. nice spot for a cocktail esp. outside, but drink quality is even better at Esca and Forbidden City (believe you're with me on this, right?) :)
      - O'Rourke's--trust the food, esp. for breakfast. Sure, the North End is not the best n'hood, but you're just as likely to run into any of the characters you described outside of Pho Mai (GREAT Vietnamese) or Iguanas Ranas (yep, I love it, too)...no worries
      - with you completely on both Fiore and Luce as well as First & Last and Illiano's...my v. favorite pizza and calzone is in Meriden (worth the ride): Napoli Pizza
      - lotsa selections on tap at Eli Cannon's, opposite side of the street from O'Rourke's
      - best sushi in town (and in this area) can be found at Mikado

A few more details on this old list of mine:

And I like Haveli on South Main (Route 17) for Indian, too.

Oh, and if you're here on the weekend everyone's moving into Wesleyan, expect ALL these restaurants will be CRAZY busy!!!

Sorry, BB, just want to clarify that Luce and Fiore are on different planets as far as $$$. I like both, but Fiore is WAY less $$$. A house salad and a huge (and delicious) entree cost about $16. The cheapest salad (a la carte) at Luce was $9 last time I went, and most entrees were in the high $20s, if I recall. We have had excellent experiences at both, but Luce is definately a more high end place.

Haven't eaten at Sammy's, but I will have to give it a try.

Besides the ones already mentioned, Udupi Bhavan is tucked away in a mall on Rt. 154 south of town. It has little charm whatsoever, but great food. It is fun though to see large families (of various ethnicities) packing in the vegetarian Indian cuisine. A little research on their website before going is a good idea to plan your selections properly.

Agree with kattyeyes on the drinks at Esca and Forbidden City (though FC's food last time I was there was lacking.) Pho Mai, Iguanas Ranas , Udupi Bhavan, Eli Cannon's, Luce, too.

But, I don't think Mikado is good sushi (actually, we to go Cromwell for sushi.) Also (IMHO) since O'Rouke's re-opened after the fire I haven't thought it was as good (still the best breakfast in Middletown, though.)

Kattyeyes- hate to admit it- but still have not gone to Vecchitto's (hanging head in shame now.)

No way, really (re Mikado)? I just went Wednesday night for the first time in a long time--spicy girl roll--spicy salmon outside, spicy tuna & spicy yellowtaill with avo inside...artfully presented with wasabi mayo and chili mayo hearts in a pool of eel sauce. If you go to Oyama for sushi in Cromwell, I do like that, too! I just cross my fingers not to land there in the midst of a hibachi fest, which can get loud. ;)

All right, dennisl, the summertime clock is tickin'--you gotta get there! We couldn't have had much hotter days this year, perfect for ice! Even today is a beautiful day for Vecchitto's...

That is exactly where I go- Oyama. But, given your other reviews I must try Mikado again.

I know, the summer is almost over......I can't let another summer go by!
