Calamari in Montreal
Hi guys, new user here :)
I was wondering if anyone had recommendations for calamari in town? My girlfriend and I like to order a big plate of calamari to eat out and since we don't eat a lot it has become our staple quick bite at a resto for us.
This question kind of popped up in my head since my gf introduced me to L'Avenue du plateau which had a nice big plate of calamari for about 10-12 bucks. They weren't the greatest, but they had what I needed from a calamari: a had a nice crispy (not soggy!) coating, not dripping in oil and there were plenty of little legs for me to chew on : ).
My personnal favorite are the ones from the fishery at Jean-Talon market (Aqua-mare I think? Wow I never noticed that I didn't even read the name of the store, I just called it they corner fishery). Their calamari just tastes better and their mayo is pretty good! The unfortunate downside is that it cost about 8$ for a very small portion.
Also sorry if I made spelling mistakes.... ever since Cammalleri came in town I've had a tendency to mess up with calamari :P
I quite like the Calimari at Rayan on Cote Des Neiges. You buy it by weight. 1 lb is more than enough for 2 people. It's relatively inexpensive. A side of their house salad and you've got a great, fresh, inexpensive lunch for two.
The quality and freshness of the salad is hit or miss though. Sometimes amazing, something, well.. underwhelming. The potato wedges are good, though sometimes cold, which is annoying. Also, the staff seems to give you better service if you bring someone who speaks arabic, but that's purely my own suspicion.
They also do a great job of cooking octopus (first steamed, then quickly grilled). Octopus is a tough one to get right, overcooked it's horrible, but when properly cooked, it's to die for.
This is not high-end dining, but it's good, fresh seafood.
