Cool, contemporary restaurant for Boyfriend's Birthday

In Boston for my boyfriend's birthday this week and want to take him somewhere kinda hip (he likes that lounge-y feel), but must be EXCELLENT food.

Right now I have reservations at L'espalier but I'm worried that even though the food is beyond good, the ambiance leaves a lot to desire. Do you have a better suggestion?

Scampo has great food and a more lively and modern feel to it. It's not luxe but I think you'd have a great time there based on the criteria.

Check out Sorellina. The vibe is trendy and the food is good.

bistro du midi is another good option - bar is cool and food is good. rocca also might work (I like the bar and the bar food as well as the restaurant food).

Might wanna check out Mistral. Even the website has the feel that your BF is looking for, and the food, like Radius, is technique-y and good, though it doesn't have that my-mother-loves-you-and-wanted-to-make-this-dish-for-you feel that many places in Boston have at the expense of the lounge-y atmosphere.

Radius? I'm not a fan, but the room is chic (for those who've never been) and the food is techique-oriented.

Check out Woodward Tavern, Neptune Oyster, Coppa, or The Gallows

for food you are not going to better than l'Espalier so how about drinks afterwards at 28 Degrees?
a short cab ride and I don't think you'll find a hipper vibe in Boston

excellent idea to head to enjoy good food then head to the lounge afterwards.

excellent food in a lounge-y atmosphere in boston? pick one or the other :)
closest is probably sorellina or you can dine at the W lounge. food is from the jean georges market kitchen.
