Help - striking out for Sat night reservations for 7

  • j

Long weekend in Montreal. Had reservations Sat night at DNA and discovered that a couple of folks in my group thought the focus on organ cuts was a bit to challenging.
Now, with 7 people, I'm not having luck at getting a reservation. Joe Beef and Au Pied de Cochon, my next choices, are totally booked. Sounds like I need to set my sights a bit lower.

Any suggestions for good food where I have a better shot at getting a reservation at a great place that is not in such high demand?
- since we are a group of 7, tiny restaurants are probably not likely to have room with such late notice
- NOT interested in traditional ethnic restaurants
- willing to take a cab so location within Montreal not an issue.

Thanks!

  1. DNA does not focus on organ cuts. If you want organ cuts, sure you cant get them but they by no means dominate the menu. Go to DNA there is something for everyone. Except maybe vegetarians (although I bet you could ask for salad). Seriously it is a very accommodating restaurant.

    1. In fact aside from blood sausage Im pretty sure Ive never eaten a 'organ meat' there... and blood sausage might not have organs in it

also in my opinion dna is far better than joe beef and apdc both in price and quality

I'll admin, "organs" is not quite the exact term (and I"m dying to go to DNA!).
Current menu on web site includes
        - veal heart tartare
        - piglet liver parfait
        - sweetbread in Agro Doce
        - pressed foie gras
        - spagetti that includes goat liver
        - "a kind of offal kebab"
        - pork blood farfalle with piglet kidney carbonara

I'll see what type of arm twisting i can do with they naysayers...

They haven't updated their website as often as they used to. I was quite apprehensive the last time I went because of what I saw listed. I think last time I had calamari which wasn't listed on the online menu and the time before I had rabbit which wasn't on the online menu.

I totally see where you are coming from and I think dna ought to update their website because now it truly seems offal based. It isnt.

PS go to Pintxo if you cant make dna work but I truly believe dna is way ahead of its time and has far better than average value (pintxo is good value too though!!)

      2. try la "Salle à Manger", Lemeac (for the 22h special), ...

Thanks Maximilien - had that on a list from one of your previous posts!

        2. To get a better idea of what DNA is serving try following Derek's twitter account.... he constantly updates it with pictures of the dishes.... (http://twitter.com/dnaderek

          )

Also the offal slant while some of the best i've ever had is not the end of their menu and your companions can mention their apprehension to the waiter....but i highly recommend the veal heart tartar and the rest.... there is a reason that people use these parts.... it's because they taste good and they show a chef's skill at the same time ....

Trust me if you go and put yourself in their hands you will have fun.....

          1. I've never found DNA to have an overly offal menu when I've gone (4 times), so I think you should definitely stick with DNA!

            1. Thanks to all. We did go to DNA and the my husband and I loved the offal and the less adventurous in our group found great options as well. Will post more details later.
