Are there any good cooking classes in New Orleans that are not for tourists? My son is a resident and I would love to give him some classes for his birthday. It looks like Savvy Gourmet is no longer in business. Ideas? Thanks.

Take a look at http://www.neworleanscookingexperienc... Frank Brighten teaches a class on Thursday nights that I am sure your son would enjoy. Somewhat touristy, but most likely the good kind, the location, House on Bayou Road also supports a bed and breakfast. Gerard Maras also teaches a a class that should be good. Not sure about the other chefs listed. It is more demonstrational than you are probably looking for, but its not so much about showmanship or entertainment as some of the other "schools" available. The only other option I can think of is that Delgado might offer some non credit classes but I doubt it. You could call though, their website is a mess, so don;t bother with that. Somewhat relatedly, ok not, but Commanders Palace has a wonderful chefs table in the kitchen that is great fun and would make a wonderful gift.

I'm headed to the new orleans cooking experience for the first time this evening - I will report back tomorrow! My mom has attended and loved it so my fiance got us classes as a Christmas gift.

Are you looking for Louisiana-style cooking classes?
