Manhattan diners & gastopubs for English visitor

Hi

OK full disclosure before I start - I'm a travel writer and I'm looking for tips, but before you think I'm a total lazy-ass, I am actually coming to New York in a few weeks for my annual NYC fix (can't wait) and will be visiting all the places recommended. Plus, I would rather get ideas that I can pass on to readers from you guys on the ground, than from a PR machine with a vested interest. Hope that's OK.

Anyway, I would like to find some great diners that are tourist friendly without being touristy, if that's possible. (My favourite place is La Bonbonniere at 28 8th Ave, but does that count as a diner?)

Secondly I'm also looking for gastropubs, or gastrobars. I know the concept is not really the same in NYC as it is in London, but I'm looking for places where the food is as important as the booze, but you would never really call it a restaurant as such. I've been told about the Breslin and the Spotted Pig. Any others?

Brooklyn recommendations are fine as well as Manhattan.

I could go on - best place in Chinatown for tapioca tea, best pizza slice....but I fear I could be here a long time (and several pounds heavier).

By the way - if someone from the States wants to make a killing, please come to London and open up an authentic US pizza joint asap!

Many thanks in advance for your help.

You could try Freeman's which I've always enjoyed. Coming from the UK, you might not want English fare, but Clerkenwell on Clinton is another good gastropub-ish spot.
