Help please! Hays, KS.

Headed to a family reunion next weekend in Sharon Springs, KS. Family is insistant upon stopping in Hays, KS for lunch. They had suggested going to Montana Mikes, but personally I would rather not go to a chain. Is there anything in town worth the stop? Ideally they'd like to go somewhere that is not far off the highway. Thanks for the help!

My wife and I passed through Hays a couple of months ago, and found AMAZING food at Gella's Diner/Lb. Brewery. It has a bistro-style menu, really good drink menu, and a very pleasant hometown vibe. It sits in downtown on 11th Street. Something to definitely check out.

Al's Chickenette has been on the east side of Hays for several decades - much better than the chains.

I always just get two pieces of fried chicken with the fries. But a friend always gets the mashed potatoes and likes them. They usually have a three piece chicken special that comes with a salad or soup as well but that's just too much food for me to eat.

Actually, Al's is on the south side of town, and is about as far away from I-70 as you can get... though in Hays, that's only about a 5 minute drive.

By golly you're right. We came into Hays on Old 40 and I can see why I thought east side, but the map makes it clear that south side is more accurate. As you said, the far side of Hays is still only about five minutes from the interstate.
