Tetsuyas - My thoughts
Have just posted my thoughts on my other major luncheon visit in my ten days in Sydney (Rockpool B and G) so here are my thoughts on Tets.
Having missed visiting here when living in the city I was dead set on getting there on a return holiday, an itch that had to be scratched, regardless of other restaurants potentially overtaking it according to some. Add to this two Sydney friends having visited and not really rating it meant that myt feelings were very mixed on arrival, I was a little on edge when a friend asked if I was excited about the lunch.
The first thing that struck me was the sheer size of the place, for some reason I was expecting 40-50 covers max, alas not, apparently up to 120 if needed. The next was the decor, nice but maybe showing its age a little? This all added to my worries about what I was about to embark on, add to that the cost and the stomach was aching through both hunger and nerves.
Thankfully though once seated all went well (am sure you thought that may be the outcome after that intro, maybe the years of eastenders/neighbours watched when younger?). The service was excellent, never too intrusive and always knowledgeable, although I did think that the ever changing servers a little odd (only one repeat waiter and the sommelier).
Enough of the restaurant though, more interested in the food surely. The tasting menu with matching wine wass a success from start to finish, I think it started a little higher than it finshed and there was a litlle lull in the middle, however al in all the meal was excellent, overall rated 8/10 for me, with some dishes scoring higher, the scampi with tofu 9/10 and the Ocean Trout a 10. I thought fish dishes were defintely the strongest and the flavours employed throughout were fantastic. The matching wines were excellent and nice to see some hunter wines on there too, Vat 1 Semillon and Maurice o Shea Shiraz both excellent with their respective dishes, also pleasing was the toppping up of wines if you had finished a glass before your food (never exploited) but a nnice touch we thought.
The four of us thoroughly enjoyed our meal and 4.5 hours after arriving we all walked out beaming, a quick tour of the kitchen purely added to the experience and I am more than happy the itch was finally scratched.
