Hong Kong Eating - My thoughts

I am finally back form a month away travelling which started with a few days in Hong Kong and a few restaurants visited. First off I think I will say that I was a little disappointed with my meals in HK, maybe my expectations were too high, or maybe my menu choices bad, but nothing blew me away as I had hoped it might. The restaurants visited were Sun Tung Lok, Tims Kitchen and Robuchon a Galera. The two dim sum lunches failed to deliver anything that really got me going (afraid memory has removed full ordering), neither would score much above a 1/10 on my scoring system. That said the shrimp dishes were always excellent and the turnip cakes at STL were great. I am a little embarassed to admit it, but the best meal by far was at RAG, a definite 8/10 for me, maybe more suited to my western palatte? Anyway, it was excellent in every way, from the fabulous breads to the very solid cooking throughout, the excellent sommelier nd wine pairing and the two trolleys for desserts and petits fours, if only Macau was a bit easier to get to!

  1. Dim sum is not what Tim's Kitchen is famous for. Their signature dishes are Crab claw with wintermelon, Jumbo Crystal shrimp, Pomelo Skin with shrimp roe, and snake soup. Have you tried them ?

      Skyline. We didn't I am afraid to admit, with such a limited time in the city I had to limit myself to a type of cuisine (and as where I live there is no dim sum at all it was chosen) so I realise not ideal but was how we had to do it. I am not saying the food was bad, just maybe I was hoping for more, possibly dound it a little lacking at times.

    2. Wow! What a huge surprise! A score of 1/10! This is the first time I have seen such low score, anywhere, given to two of Hong Kong's top restaurants! Guess this must be a textbook case illustrating the differences and diversity between Western and Chinese palettes! No wonder there were so much dissent and arguments toward the Michelin star ratings given to restaurants in Hong Kong and Tokyo awarded predominantly by western/French inspectors!
      BTW, when you remarked the dim sum at STL and Tim's failed to deliver. Which and what reference yardstick did you use? Chinese restaurants elsewhere in the Orient, China or Australia? Just curious thats all. Afterall, I trust the palette of our fellow chowhounder Peech and STL happens to be one of his favourite Dim Sum go-to place!

        Consider the source. New poster (from the UK it appears) with no reviews of his /her own who starts by asking for Vietnamese food in Hongkong and then ignores the local advice. What is so difficult about getting to Macao?

          Scoop - I would be the first to admit that I know very little of Asian cooking and what is available where, my choices were definitely informed by reading the posts from fellow chowhounders, although possibly guilty (as ever) as following some of the stars rather than local knowledge (i do the same in the uk).

          Charles - My previous knowledge of eating chinese was based on odd visits to yum cha when living in Sydney, this slightly whetted my appetite for such things. However the one restaurant that really delivered on such things wass a trip to Hakkasan in London, I arrived not expecting a huge amount and it over delivered on all accounts, a solid 5/10 based on my scoring. I therefore hoped restaurants in HK would deliver similar quality, maybe Hakkasan is western palatte oriented?

            Folks, this guy thinks Hakkasan is the real deal -- clearly there's no need for further discussion, in my opinion. I, for one, would not know where to start.

              My family has no problem admitting that they never had a good Chinese Cantonese meal (lunch or dinner) in the London area after visiting infrequently in the last 20 years (including a recent trip last month).

              But this is absolutely a first for me where someone from/in London saying some of the pretty good to very decent dim sum in Hong Kong sucks and London is better.

                Food is very subjective. I have a feeling that I will have a different experience than the original authoer. However, only he can tell what tastes good to him.

                  Guys, There are good Chinese food in London and some can be subjectively rated higher then most restaurants in Hong Kong.
                  I am HK born, lived in London for 10 years and have recently returned to HK.
                  I have tried Hakkasan and yes it is def. for the western palate whilst restaurants like royal china and Mandarin Kitchen do a great job at producing cantonese cuisine that is on a par with most restaurants in HK.
                  Sometime a restaurant is just not consistant enough to give it a good rating on every meal.

        2. Isn't 1/10 a bit harsh? Are you grading on some strange log scale? Because I cannot imagine that being true in a linear scale. 1/10 is is 10%. You are telling me, seriously, that if you go out and randomly choose ten restaurants, they would all taste better than the restaurants you tried. I don't doubt they taste bad to you, but at 1/10?

          Seriously, man. I give McDonald more than 1/10.

            The UK Good Food Guide scores restaurants out of 10, for example the Fat Duck and other 3 star places often score between 8-10/10, I purely use a similar scale. To get a score is good, day to day restaurants wouldn't even score at all, purely personal point of view and always relative to other places I have rated before
