Happy Hour in Bergen County
Hi Chowhounders,
Do any of you know of some good/great happy hours in Bergen County? My father, 83, lives in Paramus and would really like to get out and try some when I visit him in October. Thanks for your help.

I hate to admit this because I am not a big fan of Chains but the route 4 Houlihans gathers a decent crowd and does a nice happy hour.
There is also a place that is opening later this week called Boom Burger on Passaic Street in Rochelle Park. They have been advertising quite about about Happy Hours. It is right in the Ramada Hotel.
Down in Moonachie/ Carlstadt is the Grasshopper. We have gone there and had a nice time for Happy Hour.
I also have been hearing good things about the Twisted Elm in Elmwood Park for a drink and bite to eat. I don't know if they do happy hour specials though.

I've been to Chakra as well for HH. Also hit or miss. I've been there when it's empty and doesn't pick up, and I've been there when it's crowded and goes/flows right into a night crowd. Nice place though. Haven't eaten there since Thomas Cizak has taken over the kitchen, but I've been wanting to go.

I've been to many HH's at some of the places mentioned -- M&S, The Office, Bistro 55, Cheesecake Factory, etc.
I can't speak to specials, deals, or promotions. I can speak to crowd and having a good time, LOL. The Office is consistent. I like it. Reliable. Good crowd. It's in downtown Ridgewood. It's got a very good HH crowd. M&S, the few times I've been there is hit or miss. More of a place to go if two friends want to go for a drink, but it doesn't seem to attract many like that. The HH/bar crowd seems more of people who are waiting for a friend and/or waiting for a table. I've seen the odd two or three people go there for a drink, but it's not a HH kind of place/crowd to me. Maybe it's changed. I could say the same for CF.
Bistro 55 is a nice place, and yes, I think the food is good. It can have a very good HH crowd too. I say "can" because it has been hit or miss. I've been there when HH has been packed and I've been there when HH is relatively empty. It is not like it's predecessor, South City Grill. Like many places though -- it depends -- day/night of the week is big. I like the place. I've eaten there -- HH and dinner, and I've enjoyed it. Had several dishes, appetizers, that I'd order again if I went. I think the place is a nice place, good crowd, environment, etc.

Any first hand experience on Happy hour at The Office or McCormick & Schmicks? It seems some chains are outdoing family-run restaurants in this category...

re: menton1
The Office happy hour discounts some beers and martinis or margaritas. We usually get a few drinks and the hot wings (which were discounted for happy hour). McCormicks seems to change their happy hour alot but we always enjoy the food. There arent alot of drink specials, however. I think one wine, one beer, and one mixed drink. The bar offers $1.95 Happy Hour appetizer menu (and some of the appys are a little more). But the prices are super inexpensive. We just recently went to Chakra and they have a big sign outside that says 'happy hour'...but when we went inside the waitress said, we dont really have a happy hour. Just lounge food (smaller portions) and the house wine is discounted as well as I think one beer. No food specials. But we still had a good time.

re: ELA
We arrived early,,by 5/530 and it was empty. By the time 7pm rolled around it started to get busy. It was a mixed crowd,,,some families, some couples. I even saw a few young children but not many. And it seemed like there were a bunch of singles sitting at the bar. Definitely a hot spot for a friday nite. The bar/lounge has couches and drapes and dim lighting....its romantic if you are looking for a date night....

re: MommyLovesToEat
Yes, certainly that kind of ambiance -- romantic, dim, upscale lounge, etc. I've never sat a table and had dinner there since TC has taken over, and I've only stayed/sat in the bar area. I mainly saw 2-4 friends come in for a couple of drinks after work, a couple here and there, a few people who decided to have a drink before dinner. Thanks again.

re: MommyLovesToEat
Bisto 55 offers no food for discount for weekly happy hours. Drinks and Wine are $5. Draft Beers are a $1 off regular prices, which are $5-7....they offer daily specials, not everyday specials. $1 Oysters are on Mondays, Half Price Apps on Tuesdays and $3 pints are on Wednesdays.

re: tommy
What can I say.....I'm a three strikes kind of guy. More specifically, it's an easy meeting spot....just as the chains are in the GSP.
the last three meals, once each in Jan, Feb and March.....all after 8:30 PM on weeknights.
Poor: Rib Eye, Burger and Garden Chop Chop Salad
Bad: Prime Rib Beef Dip, Cold French Fries, Scallops and Crispy Calamari
Really Bad; Zucchini Portobello Mushroom Stack, Chicken Lollipops, Goffle Road Farms Chicken, Heirloom Tomatoes
Each visit from was progressively worse, but on the last visit, the Pork Chop was good....the zucchini mushroom stack and chick pea parsley salad were the dishes with the offending refrigerator odors.

re: fourunder
I was there on Thurs night and the place came up to about 1/3 filled--but you know what? That meant seats at the bar AND elbow room. Also HOT chips. Those chips are rather dangerous! We shared chorizo mac 'n cheese and chicken lollipops and I didn't find anything 'off' about any of the food (or the cocktails).

re: tommy
First, I would say the others in my party have come to the same conclusions. Second, the amount of people in a place is not a good barometer of whether the food is good or bad, no? Taking a cue from your Hunan views, i could say I've never experienced your experiences, and that wouldn't really matter at all either.
btw, I like the drinks. *Maybe*, in this case is what i have surmised.

re: MommyLovesToEat
My husband and I go there all the time for happy hour. Great place to get a 2 drinks, 2 apps and the bill is $20.00. (takes away the p[ain of paying $12.00 for a movie ticket) I love their Asian Nachos. Their Happy Hour appetizer menu has gotten a bit smaller this past year, but there is plenty of variety. There is a choice of about 10 full size apps to chose from, a few cocktails, house wines and 16 oz. on tap beers.

Questions: Are you specifically looking for reduced price drinks and food....or free food? For example, at the Riverside Square Mall in Hackensack, you can go to McCormmick & Schmick's for a $1.95 menu in the bar area only between (something like) 3-6 PM and again after 9:30 PM. There's also a Morton's Steak House, where they will bring you free Filet Mignon on toast points. Just to further expand on the higher end chain theme.....at Fleming's in Edgewater, they have a five for six til seven promotion.....loosely translated, there are 5 cocktails, 5 wines by the glass, 5 appetizers and a prime cheeseburger....any selection is only $6. For Beer, you can get two Heinekens for $6.

Never been there but if you like it let me know. Napa Valley Grille has a nice wine selection, as well as mixed drinks, beers, and restaurant.
