I second Thompson's Orchard. I live close by there and I am guilty for going there and loading up on doughnuts. I love it when you get there and they are still warm! I love the pumpkin ones, but I think the apple cider ones have moved into first place.

Bintliff's American Café (I was not impressed after looking at their website)
98 Portland Street
Portland, ME
(207) 774-0005
Our favorite for breakfast in Portland is Bintliff's. I've seen mixed reviews, which I don't get. We've always found them to be delicious and creative, with a lot to choose from. They do brunch every day.

Camden is touristy and uninteresting as compared to Rockland. We found far more interesting shops in a browse down the main drag in Rockland.

There's an awesome toy shop in Rockland that your kids might enjoy, but the name escapes me.

If you're a traditionalist who believes bigger is always better, then you need to go to Winslow, because nobody makes whoopie like Big G's. We're talking a chocolate-and-frosting pie the size of a dinner plate for a mere $2.50.

Red's Eats (well known / tourist trap
)41 Water St.
Wiscasset, Maine 04578

Prices‎: Sandwiches $2-$5; lobster rolls typically $13-$14‎
Must Eats‎: Lobster Roll ($14.00), Coleslaw ($2.00), Onion Rings ($4.00)‎
Red's Eats is a take-out restaurant located on U.S. Route 1 in Wiscasset, Maine. It is one of the most well-known and most written about restaurants in the state. Red's is known for its lobster rolls and fried clams. During the summer months, patrons may have to wait in line for more than an hour to order a lobster roll. The restaurant is considered a mid-coast Maine landmark.
… I waited 90 minutes in line for my Red's Eats lobster roll, and it was certainly tasty and overflowing with lobster, but it wasn't worth 90 minutes of waiting. Price was good, people were nice, but the wait was insane. If you chance upon a short line, try it. I got in line on the side, just beyond the eating area.

Day's Crabmeat & Lobster
1269 Route 1
Yarmouth, ME 04096-6964
(207) 846-3436
If you are visiting our great State of Maine we are easy to find. Just of 295, take Exit 17 and you will find us cooking the freshest seafood available. Our outside dining offers very pretty view of the Cousins River in Yarmouth.
Loop off I-95 north at the second Yarmouth exit, signed YArmouth/Freeport, I think, possibly Exit 17. Head north on 1 for about a half mile to Day's. Lobster or crab rolls, fried seafood, etc. Order at the window, take to a picnic table on the grassy lawn behind, overlooking the tidal estuary. Two minutes off the highway, so easy. Sure Harraseeket has more character, but it's a bit more involved to get there.

  1. Quite the list. The only thing I really disagree with is The Camden/Rockland comparson. Camden though touristy is a truly beautiful harbour and the schooners alone make it worth a visit. Rockland has come a long way in the past ten years, and I would recomend visiting both.Primo is pretty unique. Chauncey Creek really a special spot. I am one who is not in the J's camp but I live here and go elsewhere. For lobster on the water Muscongus Bay. Have fun and keep chowhounding.

    1. You might want to skip the Clam Shack in Kennebunkport. Massively overpriced and redundant to other places on your list. And I fail to see how Chauncey Creek is rated one of the best lobster shacks. Was served a vile, inedible meal there and had to throw out $60 worth of food. Not to mention the mosquitoes that tend to swarm since it is on a river/creek. Red's in Wiscasset is worth it, though be prepared for a line.

      1. You missed Mike's Clam Shack on Rt 1 in Wells. We've eaten a lot of fried clams over the years but thought Mike's were the best, different kind of batter, more crumby. It's a family type of place and might be considered a tourist trap.
MDI ice cream opened a shop on Extension St in the Old Port Area of Portland. We visited in June and thought it was great. Walk a ways up hill and there's a nice little park where you can sit and enjoy your ice cream. A recent poster said the ice cream wasn't good, contained ice crystals. Hope it was just a bad day. The flavors are very unusual.
Waterman's gets our vote for best lobster shack but I think we like the pretty spot on the water with no other commercial thing around. We started going when they just had a few picnic tables next to the water. Didn't get there last year and didn't get there this year either.
If you get to Brunswick, you also need to go to Harpswell. It's very rural and going to Dolphin Marina Restaurant is a very pleasant drive (just don't get the lobster quesadilla, it didn't have enough lobster IMO).
I agree that you shouldn't miss Camden harbor esp the view from the top of Mt Battie. Take the auto road. It's about our most favorite spot for a picnic. (take bag chairs and binoculars)

I hope you have a couple of months for vacation so you can make a dent in that list! It's a good one.

I really question some of your suggestions... I know you mean well, but the following should be excluded:
          J's Oyster
          Susan's Fish & Chips
          Fat Boy Drive-In
Coffee Pot opened on Broadway in Bangor by the women working there !!
You missed several great restaurants in Portsmouth !!
What about Dysart's Truck Stop ?
Portland has many more great restaurants then you listed !
Hugo's is not for everyone because of their pricing.
Amato's sandwiches are great all over Maine !
Several new wonderful ice cream places recently opened in Portland !
Toot's Ice Cream in Yarmouth is made and sold at their farm !
