Garibaldis Oakland, worth it? Something similar?

6 of us are taking a friend out to eat on a Monday night for her birthday. We are leaning towards Garibaldis in Oakland as this is one of her favorite spots. I have found very little on chowhound but it seems to get good web reviews. Anyone been lately and can specifically recommend any dishes? Also is there something similar but better open on a Monday night? Thank you

Well, if it's one of her faves, then you might choose to go there; but I've never been a fan. Its next-door sibling, Marzano, isn't as good as the original on Park Boulevard.

If you want to stay in the Rockridge, I'd suggest Wood Tavern, which is open Mondays, and much better.

Yeah, I agree -- the food there is perfectly good, but expensive for what it is (though I've had great desserts there). I love Wood Tavern, but they only have one table large enough for six, so you should call asap to see if you can get a reservation. If you want Italian, Pizzaiolo is a great place for a large party, and the food is better.

        Pizzaiolo is outrageously noisy.

That's a good point too, it would be nice if we could actually hear each other. We are surprising her, so it is pretty open as to where to eat. We are coming from the Walnut Creek area, but food here is not the best. Basically we want to eat and then find a quiet place for drinks after. She is not a loud and hip kind of gal. Besides Garibaldis she also likes Rivoli. Any thoughts? Thanks!

Dopo isn't quiet per se, but it definitely isn't a hip vibe and probably wouldn't be too loud on a Monday night. I only recently learned that they take reservations if you have large enough a group (6 or more?). The food is topnotch.

Otherwise, Digs Bistro in Berkeley would be a great option.

Lots of other worthy choices closed on Mondays, like Locanda da Eva, for example.

You can't make reservations at Cesar, and it would probably be a long wait for a group of 6.

How about A Cote? More fun than Garibaldi.
