Where do I buy Almond Paste in Toronto?

It's an ingredient I have never used before but I have a recipe that calls for it and I'm not sure where I can get it...any suggestions welcome.

Thanks hounds.

I am resurrecting this thread as I am still on the hunt for almond paste.

I went to Metro (Eglinton/Kipling) today and there was no almond paste. I also went to McCalls but they only have almond paste in a 1 kg tube (I only need 200 grams).

I'm going to be at SLM on Wednesday so I will search there. Fingers crossed.

Apparently Highland Farms on Dufferin is restocking (I sent corporate an email) and I also called their Vaughan location and they say they have it in stock. You would think this was an exotic item. I dont get why its not more common

I googled some recipes to make the homemade stuff...I think I'm going to go this route. It's a lot easier than hunting this product down!!

I purchased almond paste at the Bulk Barn to make the top layer of a fruit cake recently.

DIY is the only way to go. Bulk Barn's and other commercial products I've used were vile and OD'd with artificial almond extract, which prompts the question: if that gelatinous stuff in the tube or tub is made from real almonds, why douse it in fake flavors?

I used to buy Solo Almond Paste/Filling in a can at Highland Farms but sadly after driving there today I was disappointed to see they no longer have it. Haha but they do have plentry of cans of Solo poppy seed fillling.

For those who saw almond paste at at Metro and at St Lawrence Market is this the brand you are referring to. I dont want the tube which is actually heavy marzipan.

      Thanks

St. Lawrence Market. Downstairs. SW corner market thing. It's found in the bins by the cash register. Unless they changed it since a week back or so!

Bulk Barns usually have it, too. Funny but NG stores(Loblaws, Fortino's, Zehr's, etc.)seem to be the only chain hell-bent on inventory reduction. Highland Farms stores still carry an astounding range of items stocked at the boutiques at much higher prices.

McCall's (Bloor at Kipling) carries it.

Probably fresher there thanks to turnover. Supermarkets would be my last ditch choice.

Would you believe Metro carry Almond Paste in the baking aisle?

It's amazing how Metro is the only chain store that carries more Gourmet and upper end items.

I wish the 'other' chain stores would get on the bandwagon instead of controlling what we buy.

Anyway, (I rant) you will find your Almond Paste at a Metro store.
