sort by latest post?

david kaplan Aug 20, 2010 05:20 PM

Since the site redesign, I no longer see how to re-sort board posts by latest post. The boards appear only to sort by original post. Is the ability to sort by latest post:

1) Currently possible and I can't find the button? Please tell me where it is!
2) Currently not possible but getting fixed so it will be possible again?
3) Currently not possible and not going to be possible in the future?

I never realized how much Chowhound's usability depends on being able to have the option of sorting either by latest or original post until the option seems to have gone away.

    The answer is:

    >> 1) Currently possible and I can't find the button? Please tell me where it is!

I assume you have found how to start a search (at the top right corner of each page).

Once you get the results, on the line just above the list of search results, you'll see the options:

Discussion Results - Sort By - BEST MATCH - Newest First - Oldest First

So that's the short answer to your question. Click on Newest First if that's what you want. (The default is BEST MATCH which makes sense in most cases.) As for the rest of the search options and how to switch from the default settings...

At the top of the search results page, just below the big red CHOWHOUND name, is a charcoal gray box, which says "Your search for (search text) in (forum name) yielded nnn results". If you don't see any options between that and the line that says "Discussion Results - Sort By - BEST MATCH - Newest First - Oldest First", then you need to change the View. At the top right of the charcoal box is the word View and to the right of it are two boxes. Click on either box and it will display (or hide) all the other options. But the line with the options for best match, newest first, etc is always visible.

Not for search results, how do you change the sort order of this page?

      This used to be possible.

See Melanie Wong's reply -- I was asking about sorting board pages, not search results. Sorry if unclear.

Oh, obviously I misunderstood. Sorry! (And thanks to both for the clarification.)

dk, my message board index view sorts by latest post, not original post date. I don't see anywhere to toggle to original post date either.

And mine sorts only by original post date, not latest post, with no way to toggle to latest post. Our message board index views default to different sort orders? If that's right, that's odd.

All boards I visit are sorted last post first.

This is what I see for site talk -

And my view of the site talk message board lists this thread with the information that the original post (mine) was 22 hours ago, rather than the identity or time of the most recent post, and lists this thread under "Friday, August 20" (the date of the original post) by itself (since no other threads started that day).

If I knew how you made that screen shot of your view of the site talk board, I'd post it , too.

[shift] + [PrtScrn] captures the image. Save it to a graphic program.
Use your programs editing tools to select and copy the section of the image you want, then re-size that to no wider than 520 px and no higher than 390 px.

That is weird, the default "should" be .... well the same default for everyone.
I've looked at everything "clickable" on the page and can not find any way to change the sort order.

Before the design update, did you have your sort preferences set to "original post date"?
If so, maybe clearing your browsers cache will "reset" to the default.

Indeed, clearing the cache did reset to sorting by latest post. One mystery solved -- but my real hope was to have the option of toggling between original-post and latest-reply sorting on the message board index view. Do you (or anyone) know if this is a known issue that is slated to be fixed?

I haven't seen anything on this one, but the "I Hate...." thread has too many posts for me to go through them all.
Hopefully the chow team has or will look at this thread.

I guess the good news is that both sorts are still supported by the site. Maybe we'll get a status from the Design team on what it takes to restore user choice.

Was the issue of sorting to the latest reply ever addressed? I would like to click on a thread and then press a button to jump to the latest reply in that thread. It's cumbersome to have to scan through the thread for the latest reply. For long threads, my work around is to do a search for the latest responder's handle (which is identified on the board). I find it very inefficient, is there a better way?
