Cinnamon infused lamb tacos at Las Brisas on Main Street

  • 1

I'm always on the hunt for the perfect taco but there was something about the mexican restaurant Las Brisas on Main at 24th that caused me to steer away. Perhaps the lacklustre signage; I have a bias against bad restaurant typography. Perhaps the posters outside advertising the next ultimate fighting match; I have a bias against men beating each other up while I'm eating. But let this be a lesson, perhaps, in prejudging a restaurant based on a superficial evaluation. The other day, I ended up at Las Brisas not out of design but because the restaurant i was heading for was closed for a summer holiday break. So, as a sloppy second, my expectations were low but i have to report i was pleasantly surprised. They're not going to win any awards for ambience - the atmosphere is rustic tavern - colonial style wooden tables and chairs. Palm tree silhouettes line the walls. Couple of wall mounted TVs on random channels add to the visual noise. There's a stage in the middle of the restaurant containing a lone drum-set suggesting the promise of live music. The menus is what you might expect - burritos, tacos, fajitas - but all a little pricey for Mexican food in this town. You could pay $15+ for the one of the fajita plates. $13+ for a burrito. I settled for the $11 tacos. They're policy is irritating like many local mexican places - no mixing and matching with the taco fillings. Dona Cata on Victoria and La Tacquiera on Hastings both allow you to tacos trios with different fillings, but this policy is exceptional. So, I went for the lamb tacos (which, in itself, is a relatively rare find) and I was very pleasantly surprised. Large pieces of well cooked, flaky lamb shoulder nicely spiced and hinted with cinnamon came generously mounted on three doubled up corn tortillas. Prevention was interesting - the whole thing came wrapped in foil for you to unwrap like a present. Little bowls containing onions, chili sauce and cilantro came on the side to help customize the tacos to your taste. Plus a side plate of refried beans with cheese was another welcome surprise. It was a very filling a tasty meal which i washed down with a shot from their tequila list. Can't vouch for any other items on the menu but for healthy serving of cinnamon infused lamb tacos, it's worth a visit.

  1. Thanks for the timely post, td. We've been debating trying out Las Brisas, but I've been too beaten down by the many poor Mexican meals I've had in this town :-). Plus a few not so great reports online. You are the first one to give me some hope! That is a funny presentation, for sure. The room looks not greatly changed from when it was the egregious Purple Crab, though they seem to have gotten rid of the bizarre plinth by the door.
