Guelph evening out

  • 9

I would like to gift an "evening out" to a couple in Guelph (new parents; an evening without the kids!), but really am not familiar with the local food scene, and the postings on this board seem a bit outdated (generally 1-3 years old). Seafood's not an option (shellfish allergy), and they don't appreciate "fussy food." I am leaning to solid bistro as they tend to be fairly casual, but I would like this to be a bit of a treat. We've all been to Babelfish, which we found quite delicious (wonderful beef & stilton main on our visit last November), and I've recently been to Artisinale, which I found underwhelming. Earlier recommendations from this board that I am considering are:

Bin 23
Bistro Six
La Cucina
The Other Brother's

Could anyone comment on current experiences at any of these places, or recommend other comparable options?

Thanks!

  1. My experience there is outdated, but I found Bistro Six to be quite terrible. Four of us went, and none of us liked our meal. My friend's chicken was super dry and unappetizing. I could be wrong, but I think I heard that it was closed...
I tried Other Brothers, it was pretty good! The ambiance is more upscale, but I liked Babelfish's food better

My foodie friend recently tried Los Abuelos, which she really liked. It's more "kitchy" and cute though. It has empandas and humitas so maybe that is "fussy food"? Wish I could be of more help, but I moved away from Guelph several years ago =)

    Good luck

    1. I believe that Bistro Six closed about a year ago.

La Cucina's pretty good; menu focuses on regional Italian cooking.

The Other Brother: I stayed away for a few years because they seemed to be in a rut (safe predictable menu that never seemed to change). I did try it again last fall, there were changes, and have to admit that I was pleasantly surprised. But my vote still goes to La Cucina.

        1. I'd give a thumbs up to the Fat Duck at Kortwright and Edinburgh. Everything we have had there has been excellent and the atmosphere is low key.

          2. Thanks all for the recs - I'm now torn between La Cucina and The Fat Duck (sparing them the probably short drive to Envers in Morriston!)! Fat Duck actually looks perfect, except their site indicates "no reservations" - Does anyone know whether it would be a problem getting a table at 7:30ish on a Friday or Saturday night?

I just spoke with the restaurant and they said that there should be no problem either of those nights. The woman suggested that if you are concerned call an hour or two ahead and they will put you on a wait list.

Awesome - thanks very much!!! (Especially for the "over-and-above" investigation!)
