where to eat and watch game in quarter?

Heading to N.O. from TX for long weekend and want to watch the Saints v. Texans game at a "locals" bar that also serves good food in the Quarter (where we're staying). Any recommendations? We are starting the evening early at the Spotted Cat for jazz, so something close to that would be good too.

I live in the French Quarter and there is not a good place to watch a game. You can either watch on good TV's in some chain with a pack of bored tourists, or you can hole up with some local flavor on a fuzzy TV from 1992 at Johnny White's or the Erin Rose. And of the two I would take the dive bar route with the glorified radio every time.

I would recommend a short cab ride or bicycle trip to Markey's in the Bywater. It feels like a hole in the wall but there is cable, or at least some form of satellite reception. The walls are covered in high definition football. The volume is loud and the place will be full of locals. It's one neighborhood over from the Marigny so you'll be pretty close to the Spotted Cat. This website will tell you nothing but it gives you an address: http://www.markeysbar.com/

And when the Saints are up by four touchdowns and you don't feel like watching anymore you can play shuffleboard...

Is there anything to eat at Markey's. Sounds fun, I might have to go down there. Could always grab a pie form Pizza Delicious to bring home.

Yeah they have a kitchen with bar food. Poboys, quesadillas, etc. It's pretty good actually.

This sounds like a cool place to watch a Saints game. I'll be down first weekend in October with my family. I need a breakfast place to take everyone before the game starts--any suggestions in the Bywayter or Marigny?

There is actually no food at all in Markey's. They closed their kitchen more than a year ago.

            John,
Can you recommend a place in the Bywater or Marigny to take my wife, parents, and 3 year old for breakfast before watching the game at Markey's? I'll be there the first weekend in October. Thanks.

Elizabeth's is the place in the M/BW but they are not open for breakfast during the week only Brunch on Saturday/Sunday. The game is at what time. It's at 7:30. Go to Elizabeth's for lunch. You can have lunch there at 11:30 AM.

              Elizabeth's @ 601 Gallier St., New Orleans, LA. 504 - 944 - 9272.

I sent them an email already! Thanks. It is between Elizabeth's and Cake Cafe. Are either of them walkable to Markey's? I'd rather not drive.

Markey's is 3 block's W of Elizabeth's. And NOLA blocks are not long. 10 minute walk. But you are about 15 blocks from Esplanade which is where FQ ends and Marigny starts. Walk over but get a cab back. Where are you staying.

We're staying all the way over at the Windsor Court. We'll have to cab it over from the hotel. I knew it was a long walk from the FQ, so wanted to make sure that once we're over there we can get to Markey's. Thanks so much for the info.

Bmoskowitz..........if you are willing to take a cab consider going to Cotter Brown's Bar which is one of NOLA's good sports bars at Riverbend. You could take the streetcar and have a cold drink on the ride. Coulis is a great place for breakfast on your way just one block off St. Charles. It's 2 miles from WC to Elizabeth's. It's about 5 miles to CB's but it's a nice street car ride and a great neighborhood around Tulane. Coulis is on Pyrtania which is a fun area also. There's great shopping on Magazine which is just a few blocks away.

Turtle Bay is 4/5 blocks from Spotted Cat and has good bar food and 4/5 TV's. Actually about every bar in the FQ will have the Saint's games on a TV every weekend.
