Where to meet between Baltimore and D.C.?

Whenever we get together with our friends from D.C., we drive all of the way there, or they drive all of the way here. There have to be some good places to eat in the middle. Any suggestions?

  1. Oh, yes. Life in the middle. What is out here? Probably best to organize some ideas by the exits -- from north to south. Search around here for prior strings about these places. They're mostly casual, some ranging down to really casual like R&R, Bon Fresco, or An Loi.

Rte 100 -- Victoria Gastropub or Coal Fire Pizza west of I-95; Ceazar Restaurant for Persian east of I-95.

Rte 175 -- Mango Grove for vegetarian Indian, Bon Fresco for sandwiches, or Sushi King for sushi west of I-95; great tacos at R&R Tacqueria east of I-95.

Rte 32 -- An Loi for Vietnamese or House of India west of I-95 on Snowden River; Grace Garden in Odenton east of I-95 and east of BWI.

Rte 216 -- Looney's, Venegas Prime Filet, or Ranazul in Maple Lawn just west of Rte 29.

    Rte 198 -- Cuba de Ayer in Burtonsville west of Rte 29 (also a Maiwand Kabob, a Rita's and an Ethiopian place in the same block);

If you want to get off the highway a little more, check out Sushi Sono, Red Pearl or Maiwand Kabob in Columbia. Or drive down into downtown Ellicott City for Pure Wine Cafe, Portalli's, etc.

And Old Hickory Grill, near Cuba de Ayer, for a tasty lunch.

Don't forget Little Spice (Thai) in Hanover, MD.

    2. In Laurel, try Pasta Plus, Sapphire Indian or Mango's Grill. In Laurel/Columbia betweenspace, try Facci. And I echo Howchow's suggestions of Victoria Gastropub, Coalfire, Sushi King, and most especially Grace Garden.

G&M way up close to Balto is pretty good for crabcakes, too.

Crossroads Pub? That's new to me. Can you describe a little more?

(And I'm with you on Jesse Wong's Asean Bistro. Still a place that we get takeout comfort food, but I feel like it has shifted from exceptional 3-4 years ago to "better than average" now.)

crab house in Dayton MD in howard county . good crabs, great fried oysters, clams, shrimp. Very fair on prices. Neighborhood like place

        2. re: Pool Boy

I really wouldn't recommend G&M to anyone. Sushi King and Grace Garden are both very good though.

+1 for the places listed above in Laurel.

          2. Jesse Wong's Asean Bistro in Columbia has outstanding pan-Asian food (mostly Chinese) in a very pleasant setting. It stayed on Washingtonian food critic Todd Kliman's weekly list of "25 Places I'd Spend My Own Money" for several months, although it has recently dropped off that list. Slightly upscale.

used to love jesse wongs for "high end" pan asian cuisine but last couple of times there I was unimpressed...it seemed like the very high end ingredients well prepared in a gourmet asian way and presented beautifully had become mediocre quality food that was nothing special. Has it returned to its old excellent ways? Sure hope so. It definitely was at one time a go to restaurant that you could turn someone on to and they would be full of ooooo's and aaaah's!

Last time I ate there was in March 2010 and it was impressive then.

            2. The Victoria Pub is fine, but in the same shopping/business center there is a Donna's which I think is much better and which has a more creative menu.

Can you expand on what Donna's is? I'm interested in this area since I go up about once a week.
