Changes in Montclair

Drove through part of Montclair yesterday and noticed:

1. Thai Chef has a "Coming Soon...Tee Time" and something about French food...?!?

2. The space on Valley Road that used to be Joe Bartoni's no longer has a 'for lease' sign in the window...

3. I do NOT know that this means anything, but I found it odd that Uptown was closed at 5:30 on a Wednesday--without a sign on the door indicating they were on vacation.

#1 is still the biggest "HUH?" in my book, though.

  1. More updates in Montclair: Costanera is a very good Peruvian restaurant on Bloomfield Avenue where Udupi Village used to be, near Mesob...Table 8 looks closed...Cuban Pete looks to be opening an annex...outdoor dining is thriving on Church Street in good weather.

Table 8 is indeed closed. Heard Demetri is planning something else

That strorefront next to Cuban Petes has let us know for past year Baby Pedro is coming soon - but Pedro will probably be a toddler by the time it opens.

Gelato place on Church good but expensive. Cupcakes Galore serviceable.

      The Nook is awful!!

    2. Also, Diva Lounge looked closed. Don't know if this is a vacation or more permanent. I have to look at Baristanet if it is still up, good source on Montclair area.

Diva Loug definitely looked closed on Saturday night as we drove to the expanded Culinariane, which was top notch and very attractive. Only complaint was overly salty sauces, everything else was very good.

At first , I thought that "Tee Time" was only going to be a restaurant in the building on the left as you looked at Thai Chef, but now there is a sign in the middle, which leads me to believe Thai Chef is going bye-bye. Surprising, since it's been there so long. There is more Thai competition than there used to be--Tuptim, Brookside, Bangkok Kitchen, etc.

Would not want to own a restaurant in this economy.

Montclair has always had a very volatile restaurant scene...

As far as Thai competition goes, there is also a fairly new place called Boonsong in Bloomfield. It's excellent. I heard that it's owned by the same people as Tuptim but it blows the doors off Tuptim. The chef is way better, based on what I've tried so far. Real authentic tastes. They have some of the best crispy watercress salad that I've ever had.

And as far as restaurants actually in Montclair itself, has everyone been to Aroma Palace? Go! It's great. We in NJ seem to have better Indian restaurants than NY does! Much better! Their Sunday lunch buffet is astonishing. Jackson Heights in Queens should be ashamed of itself.

Tee-Time is the same owners/family as Thai Chef (my friend's family). French brunch place that just opened 10/17. Thai Chef is not going anywhere.

Diva is closed. The liquor license transferred in May and Diva focused on private catering. Great parties we held with the last one on June 26. Can't say Diva will be back - either under the name or at the location - but a few of the staff are talking about 'taking it on the road' with a focus on private parties at venues in the region.

            3. Joe Bartoni's had great food and the prices we very reasonable. It was my favorite in the area and they did a real nice job. roz and the rest of the crew were terrific.
Bangkok Kitchen in Caldwell i think is the best Thai in the area. Not a fan of Thai Chef, the service has always been dodgy.
