restaurant link search bugs

Robert Lauriston Aug 18, 2010 12:20 PM

The search in Manage Your Links is no longer limited to the local region. E.g. if I search for "Paisan" in a post to the San Francisco Bay Area board, it finds places in Minnesota, Texas, etc.

Also, if I press Esc to get out of that search, it adds a link to the place at the top of the list.

And another bug, when I tried to link to Hog Island Oyster Bar in this post,
http://chowhound.chow.com/topics/611664#6001599 , the proper link does not appear in the link search result, only the two related Hog Island companies in Marshall and Napa, CA.

This is the restaurant & bars record I was trying to link,

The other problem with non-local restaurants included in search is that the drop-down menu only shows a limited number. In two examples where I've tried to link a restaurant named Tony's and one named The Kitchen, the local restaurants I want do not appear on the menu of choices. They've been crowded out by places with the same name all over the country.

Engineering, any work around for this?

try to search for Trattoria x or Pizzeria Y in Italy - every darn restaurant in the US with that word in the name comes up. its ridiculous.

If you omit Trattoria or Pizzeria and just include the key word, the pull down menu will sometimes find it. Or not.

of course. and thats what I do. but its still galling to see US results returned when I am searching in Italy.

I also think the search logic is less logical when foreign language words are involved but I guess thats to be expected.

Agreed. I imagine that searching the world for each restaurant must be a strain on the servers, what a waste. I hope there's a fix soon, as it is impossible to use the linking in many cases.

I'm "linking" a lot less because of this glitch also.

there really ought to be a simple fix to this too in the search logic priority!

Yes, and as noted in the earlier post, searching a wider geography, the feature works more slowly. Sometimes it flutters around and bounces up and down before it offers up the record I'm trying to find. Very user-unfriendly.
