Milbree will be reopening next Tuesday Nov 23rd 2010 at their new 350 Davis Drive Newmarket location, but sadly will not have their famous smoked fish.... =' (

Bump.
Anyone been to the reopened store in Newmarket ? Is it worth a trip ? Do they have any plans on restarting their smoked fish ?

Yes, we went before Christmas. They may be closed for the holidays right now (hubby tried phoning them the other day and there was no answer). They still had their yummy pulla, joulu tortu for the Christmas season, Karelia pastries, and donuts with fruit fillings. I also tried their rum balls which were rich and delicious. I didn't see any smoked fish. I think they also used to take orders for smoked hams or turkeys (?) before Christmas but I didn't see any signs up for those either. The lady behind the counter told us they were shipping a lot of food across the country before the holidays so they were a little low in stock that day.

I went there about a week after they opened. They do sell cold smoked salmon, but it is not their own for the time being. If I recall correctly it's from a smokehouse in Barrie, but it is pretty similar to their own. They said that they are in the process of getting their license for the smokehouse... who knows when that will go through. They sometimes pre-package slices of smoked salmon but I have also asked them to cut more salmon.

Thanks very much for the updates. Disappointing about not having their own smoked fish yet (which was excellent), but it still sounds like it's worth a trip. Thanks again.

So for somebody not interested in driving to Newmarket---What is now the best smoked fish in Toronto

I love the smoked salmon at Harbord Bakery. Not sure who makes it for them (it's in clear plastic with no label), but it's excellent.

I would also choose Harbord as the best alternative for not driving up to Milbree. It's the closest out of the ones I have tried so far.

Some people like Kristapson's Smoked Salmon. I liked Milbree's better.

IMHO, the best are :
Cold Smoked Salmon : Kristapson's (a few locations but I get mine at the outlet shop at 3248 Yonge Street (S of 401).
Hot Smoked Salmon : Diana's at 2101 Lawrence E (E of Warden). They have 2 or 3 varieties. All excellent.
Freezer Backup : Nanuk cdn pacific cold smoked Coho 140g net only $5.99 at Seafood Depot. Excellent frozen product.

Nanuk is to smoked salmon what Pringles is to kettle cooked potato chips. At one point in its product life it WAS a salmon, but after all the processing and freezing and thawing, the product has lost all its authenticity.

So... name a better frozen product to act as 'backup'.

That's a bit severe. If I'm feeding a crowd or feeling penurous but in a smoked salmon mood, Nanuk does the trick when it's <10 minutes away at Costco.

Stopped into MV's new location in Newmarket last week. Tiny place with poor selection. Very disappointing, don't waste the gas.
