Seems like if a west indian restaurant opened here in St. John's it would do pretty darn good. I remember a few years ago I was here and there was a place opened downtown but I guess it didn't survive. I didn't try it since I was living in Toronto at the time and had easy access to all the Dahl Puri, Roti or Buss Up Shot I wanted! What I wouldn't do now to have a feed of it!

Aww that's too bad!! I'm from TnT and pregnant, so I neeeeeed home food asap!! Lol I'm looking to get s bunch mailed here. I know it can be done bcuz I used to buy roti from a shop in winnipeg that got their roti from toronto! Ill cry if I don't get roti!!!

        1. re: lafarzia

That must be really bad!! Maybe if you know someone going to Toronto in the near future you could get them to bring you back some! If I know anyone who is going I'll leave a message here!

We don't get up to TO very often. My husband went up in January...we did get some dahl puri..they were huge and sooooo delish....someone should open a shop ...with decent West Indian foods, etc down east!!! See my earlier post today!!!

              1. re: karenzkarz

Lafarzia can get some roti from Winnipeg. She used to eat at the restaurant there that was serving roti...check out her replies!!!

How are you doing ?? Pregnancy can give you the gimmies now syndrome!!! LOL But it would be nice to have some doubles, some roti, some dahl puri and so the list goes on. Someone should open a shop!! I do not know if there are alot of West Indians here....cannot blame them as it is damn cold!!...but do you think a shop would have a pretty good future here???

OK folks, I have been talking to some people to get roti shipped to the rock. Would anyone else be interested in getting in on this? We would pay for our own rotis and split the cost of shipping.... dhalpuri and paratha. I would prefer to make one big shipment and stick them in ym freezer. My last pregnancy, I ate dhalpuri for breakfast lunch and dinner!!! lol I am thinking about getting 100 each for myself. I think that should last me for a while.... Let me know! You are also welcome to email me at farzia1980@hotmail.com
                Cheers :)

Hi there..I will check with my husband...myself, I would like to get some. Does the restaurant make other goodies??? Thanks so much for answering...

                      1. re: lafarzia

My husband said that he would like 50.00 worth..is that ok??? What about the other couple of people who also inquired.?/ I will message them as well...the more the merrier!!!

                2. re: lafarzia

I have never gotten an answer for that beautiful, wonderfull roti/dahl puri. Sure I could make it but I do not have the time nor the patience...arthritis does not help either!!! My husband is from Guyana where this is a common every day feast...as is TnT and of course the Carribean. I have stood up in mid Port of Spain and devoured a chicken( luv the bones)curry roti...heaven!!!

We had some from Halifax...awful!!!! Sometimes we get them from Montreal...great or TO...also great. Guess there is not an easier way to get this treat in our neck of the woods. There was a small shop down near the Murray Premises...alas...gone!!! We need a place to sell, eat and buy West Indian stuff..produce too..what I would give for pumpkin and a piece of breadfruit!!!!

Thanks for replys everyone. Keep in touch!!

                  1. re: marykran

this is good to know! I have a friend who owns a small west indian grocery in winnipeg, but there are other places to get our local stuff, so business isnt so great... Maybe I can convince her to move to NL!! That would be just perfection!!!

                3. from what I understand, most joints in Hali and the surrounding areas get their roti sheets shipped in from Toronto, since most find it cost prohibitive to make their own. Some places will be kind enough to sell you a couple sheets, but you may have to check to see if anyone in T.O. would be willing to ship what you need to The Rock. Otherwise, you could try and make your own roti. Same goes for dalh puri. Is dahl or dahl flour difficult to locate there?

I can make any kind of roti and the ingredients are here... I just dont have the time to make it! lol But I am looking to find a company to ship maybe 50 dhalpuri and 50 paratha... more if i can get more ppl in NL who wants! And definitely on an ongoing basis for the next maybe 7-8 months.
