Indian Grocery Near Boston

Hi hounds,

I have recently gotten into making Indian food at home and would like to supplement my spice cabinet with garam masala, coriander pods, etc. I live in the south end and am looking for an Indian grocery nearbyish with a good selection of cheap spices. Some board research revealed an Indian market on Moody St in Waltham, but those posts were from 2007, so I wanted to check if anything better/new has sprung up since then. Thanks!

  1. Get thee to Moody Street in Waltham. There are several serious Indian groceries there within a few blocks of one another. It will be well worth the trip.

Moody St. in Waltham has BY FAR the best Indian grocery stores in greater Boston.

    2. I shop at Shalimar India Food & Spices in Central Square, right on the red line if transportation to Waltham is an issue. I have had great luck buying everything I have needed there. Their hot peppers are wonderful! When the women are behind the counter, the service is not particularly friendly, but the men can't help fast enough.

      1. Moody St has at least 3 grocers, including Patel Brothers, which is all over the East Coast, but still feels sorta non-chainey.

A few stores exist along Route 9 around Framingham as well. One has a tiny little dosa stand in the back.

        1. There is also Punjab in Arlington, which is frequented and liked by a friend who cooks Indian reguarly (454 Mass Ave) and, in Brookline, just outside Coolidge Corner, Kashmir (234 Harvard Street).

And, Christina's (Inman Square) will certainly keep you stocked in the dry spice department.

Punjab's associated grocery store across the street, Chai Café, has CLOSED.

The restaurant is still doing well.

          2. If you have a car, there's a decent Indian grocery on the westbound side of Rte 9 in Natick.
It's not as tidy as the picture makes it look, but they do have a lot of interesting southern Indian seasonings and prepared foods.
But I agree with everyone else that Moody Street is really where it's at. I just had to put in a plug for metrowest!
