Birthday Cake

It's my best friend's 30th birthday this weekend and I wanted to make a small cake to bring to her daytime barbecue pre-going out celebration Saturday afternoon. It's going to be in an 8" cake pan, and have two layers. I plan to write happy birthday on top and maybe do a little decorative frosting flower or some kind but that is basically my only plan. I was thinking of using a caramel frosting recipe I saw in a magazine recently. Does anyone have a great cake recipe to recommend? Thanks so much!

This chocolate stout cake makes the moistest, richest, most delicious chocolate cake I've ever had. It makes three huge layers as written; I have halved it and made two normal layers or a bundt cake: http://www.epicurious.com/recipes/foo...

why not have a look at chockylit's back catalog of cupcake recipes? she has lots of amazing flavours and you can usually convert cupcakes recipes very simply - 12 cupcakes is equal to about 1 9 inch cake. (just use the excess to make a few little cupcakes for example). Chocolate cake with salted caramel frosting would be pretty amazing for me.
