Best dinners in and near Quebec City?

2 NYCers plus our 13-year-old son are visiting Quebec City his coming Saturday and Sunday, looking for great places to have dinner. French or other food typical of the area would be nice. Ethnic also fine. Fancy or unusual food is fine but nothing where we'd need to be dressed up. Also, any recs. for Baie S. Paul or Tadoussac or nearby for later in week?

      1. Lucky you - the food in the Charlevoix region is fantastic. Try Le Mouton Noir in Baie St. Paul for either lunch or dinner. The food is wonderful and there would be no need to dress up. We had some wonderful charcuterie at Le Mouton Noir and our other dish was a merguez sausage that came with some of the tastiest vegetables I have ever had. On the way up to Tadoussac, you could stop at Pains d'Exclamation, a bakery in La Malbaie (about halfway between Baie St. Paul and Tadoussac), for lunch or a snack. We really liked the sandwiches there (we bought them for a picnic lunch before our whale watching trip) and the pastries were terrific as well.

        1. We were 4 NYC-ers in Quebec City *last* weekend (2 sons -- a 16-year-old adventurous eater & a 12-year-old picky one) so I'll pass on my thumbs-up and thumbs-downs:

          We really liked:

          Le Billig - 526 Rue St. Jean - Tiny place (might want to call ahead to make a reservation; we did) friendly one-person serving staff; delicious food w/a lot of crepes on the menu; I had the cassoulet special, my wife had the fish stew, and our older son had a crepe w/some duck in it; youngest had a chocolate dessert crepe as a main course.

          Cafe Hobbit - down the block at 700 Rue St. Jean - A little bigger, a little fancier, a little more expensive, also delicious. Main courses of duck confit and elk steak (came out a little rare), and a salad. Desserts of creme brulee and cheesecake.

          Rue St. Jean seemed to be a good street for restaurants. If you want to explore, you could just park there and walk up and down.

          We really didn't like:

          Petit Chateau (5 Rue St. Louis, in the heart of the tourist-district old city). Four bleh crepes. But hey, we were really hungry & didn't have the strength to walk any farther.

          I'm not sure whether Swiss is one of the ethnic foods you're looking for, but we also had a so-so meal at La Grolla, a fondue restaurant in the Ste. Foy area (I believe there's another branch downtown). Again, we were hungry, so we stopped at the first reasonable-looking option. I don't believe I've ever been to a Swiss restaurant before; nothing we ate (some meat you dipped in broth) would persuade me to try another one. Other than the long-fork novelty, I don't get it.

          1. We, too, just returned from three days in Quebec. We, too, ate at Le Billig and Hobbit; we, too enjoyed both. The Hobbit served a good breakfast as well. Our other dinner was at Cochon Dingue. It had a more standard menu, and I would say it was enjoyable, but probably our least favorite dinner of the three. It's kid-friendly, though.

            I would echo the warning about Billig - we didn't realize it was so tiny. We were seated promptly, but other, larger, parties decided not to wait (it was raining, also, which made the two patio tables unusable).
