D,Guru...Indian in FD

This place opened late last week on Devonshire St, across from J Pace and next to Roly Poly.

Had a very good lunch today. They do 5 or 6 dishes every day that are precooked and on a steam table. I tasted a chicken tikka masala and chicken curry and went with the curry. Good spice flavor, dishes come with naan, eh, rice and veg..very creamy tasty spinach.

They say they will have different menu items every day but they haven't so far changed much, although only open 3 days...:)

Few tables, basically takeout. I don't think anyone should make a special trip from Somerville or anywhere else for this but it's a nice addition to the area.

Had a vegetarian plate there this week. The palak paneer was delicious and spiced really well - and the spinach wasn't that gray-green overcooked glop. The aloo gobi was also fresh and tasty. Lots of indian spice. For just about $7 it was too much to eat so I had the leftovers for dinner. Great addition to the FD.

I stopped by today and got biryani, which I agree was very good and had a generous portion of lamb. It wasn't the type of biryani I'm used to -- the rice was cooked in a tomato/spice paste and had raisins and cashews. There were lots of whole spices, which on one hand I appreciated for their authenticity and flavor, but on the other hand were hard to pick out and I kept chomping odwn on them. (Cashews can look a lot like cardamom pods, and raisins like peppercorns, unless you're paying close attention to each bite before you eat it.) It came with a container of green raita and some unnecessary bread which was not really naan -- it's flatter and a little tougher.

I was in and out in under five minutes. There was more seating than I expected -- about four small tables and when I got there just before noon, only one table was taken. As noted by others, portions are enormous. I ate about a third and will bring the rest home. $9.50 (with tax) seemed like an awful lot to pay for lunch. Even though the price was justified by the huge amount, I'd much rather pay $5 for a lunch-size portion. I'll be back when I have an Indian craving and want a bunch of leftovers.

enjoyed their aloo gobi. the lamb curry was a bit bland (and the lamb on the dry side) but my Indian friend said that their lamb biryani was very good. Definitely going into my lunch rotation.

Hit it up today. So happy to have Indian in the financial district- there are only so many places to eat down here and it can get mighty repetetive.

I got the veggie combo with a dal and a kidney bean dish. Both were very good. My only (minor) complaint is that I prefer a much higher spice level than what they could possibly provide at a place like this. That, however, won't stop me from going back with regularity.

The heat level is very toned down, I agree, but spiced excellently otherwise. Going to put up a review now.

Just went today - was so excited to have decent Indian food nearby, that I decided it was worth the potential soaking and umbrella-mangling. Got the chicken tikka masala (needed some comfort food) with the potatoes and peas as a side. Definitely not a puddle of orange colored ghee, just simple and delicious, as SG notes. The naan was interesting, and very buttery. I loved the pickles that came with the combo, and the guy at the register was kind enough to give me a raita when I ogled it (technically comes with biryani). This place is the Cafe Latino of Indian food - for $7.95 the portion was unfinishable. My DC got the chicken keema which was even better, next time I'll try that, or the biryani.

I guess they are changing the offerings because when I went last week the second chicken dish was D something. Possibly Dhaniya. It was good either way. No chicken keema that day.

Unfortunately, not open on the weekends =(

My favorite Indian place. I travel 30 minutes to eat at their sommerville location - downtown would be so much closer . . .

I visited D'Guru yesterday and tried to order the saag, but was foiled by my own soft talking and got the potato dish - which had nice spicing, but was quite salty. The chana dal was tasty, the rice a little dry and I think the bread was roti. I won't go back right away, but I'll go back :)

I really love Guru the Caterer. It really shines most for what it is not:

                  - Full of ghee
                  - cooked to death

I find they excel for their fresh, well made dishes that just taste good. Even if they are not the most complex or sophisticated... If I was downtown more I would be psyched at the new local.

Cool. I didn't know this until I googled, but D'Guru are the same people as Guru the Caterer, the Somerville favorite.
