Breakfast en route to plantation tours

Hi everyone! I am coming to town in October and am planning on hitting a few plantations, the farthest away being Oak Alley. I am hoping to leave the quarter early and grab breakfast on the way out. The ideal spot would be casual but good, and anywhere along the trip (I would drive straight to breakfast and then hit the plantations in any order). I can't find anything online for breakfast, and if there are no good contenders I would consider Nobile’s Restaurant in Lutcher for an early lunch, so your thoughts on that would be appreciated as well. It looks like we will be doing this trip either Sunday or Monday. Thank you in advance.

Jessica

Thank you all again for the info. I'm making changes as we speak. I appreciate your help.

In May we toured Laura and stopped at B&C for lunch.

We all four thoroughly enjoyed our meals.

Thank you all for the info so far. The plantations that we are thinking about are Oak Alley, Laura, San Francisco and St. Joseph. I only see us doing 2 or 3 out of the 4 of them.

We stay in a condo across from the Ursiline Convent on Charters (awesome place if you know anyone who needs) so we could walk over to Mena's or Daisy Duke's, but I might save that for another day. I really want to kind of wake up and get out of town.

Littleman, I'm hoping for Saturday lunch at Galatorie's already :)

So it looks like it will make the most sense to have coffee before we leave the condo, do one plantation early and pick one of those three places for lunch. At the moment I'm leaning towards Monday because St. Joseph, which is closed on Sunday, is doing special Creole mourning tours starting that week. Thank you all for the information. While I have you though, does anyone know when Gambit's Best of New Orleans comes out? I thought it was the 2nd week of August, but there is nothing about it on their page.

Oak Alley has an outstanding restaurant open for breakfast and lunch. Get coffee and head there first. You will be on your return to NOLA after you tour OA and have lunch. Stop at a few more homes if you feel like it.

You should definitely get a mint julep while at Oak Alley and relax on the porch. Laura plantation is right next door to Oak Alley and provides a different look at plantation life. IMO, I would skip San Francisco (it's in the middle of an oil refinery).

I agree with skipping San Francisco if time is limited...other are more interesting. On the East Bank, there are the three-in-a-row of Houmas, Bocage and Hermitage (Hermitage is not open to the public but you can view, from the road, what has been called the finest proportioned house of them all). On that side of the river, near the Sunshine Bridge, is Hymel's but if you eat at Oak Alley you will likely not be too hungry and, as suggested, to return to NOLA for late lunch would be a perfect day, I think. THe three house mentioned, though, might be too far upriver for your schedule.

Hopefully Celeste will reply, she seems to know more about rural dining than anyone else.

Wayne Jacobs Smokehouse/Restaurant in Laplace has a Sunday jazz brunch, 10:30-2 pm, but it's closed on Mondays. 985-652-9990. Nobile's in Lutcher is a perfectly fine choice for lunch (mmm, petits pois w/rice & fried chicken), too, as is Hymel's in Convent or B&C Seafood in Vacherie.

None of these places is near the other, so you'll need to plan your travels with a distinct eye on food. It's easy to find nothing open on Sundays in the country, too. Which historic homes do you plan to visit?

He said Oak Alley would be the furtherest away so that leaves Destrehan, San Francisco and Laura I guess.

Oak Alley serves breakfast at 8 AM if that would work. I would get a cup of coffee, tour those historic homes and make it back to FQ in time for a nice lunch at Galatoire's.

What kind of food does Wayne Jacobs have on their brunch menu? I can't find a dinner menu or times they are open either. I live in La Place and would like somewhere new to try.

Mena's Palace on Chartres opens at 6:30 and serves outstanding breakfast and lunch at a reasonable cost. You should be able to walk there from your FQ hotel, eat and return to your hotel to get your car. Daisy Dukes would also be a good choice serving breakfast, lunch and dinner 24 and 7.
