Halifax Mini-trip report
Just on my way home after a few days in Halifax, and figured I'd post my experiences since I tend to use this board quite often when I'm in Halifax.
All in all, it was a great trip meal-wise. We had two great dinners, with the first night at Morris East where I had a veggie pizza and my partner had the chorizo sausage special, and the second night at Fid, where I had the hangar steak and my partner had the scallops.
We also had three really good lunch/brunches. We went to Fred, The Coastal Cafe, and Brooklyn Warehouse. The stand-out dish was definitely The Marrakech at The Coastal Cafe. Had the burger at Brooklyn Warehouse and found it tasty but WAY too dry/overc, ooked.
The only disappointing meal of the entire trip was Bish. Sorry, but for a restaurant to be considered one of the best, it has to excel on both the food and service level. The food at Bish was, for the most part, very good, but the service definitely wasn't. Little things, like making sure that there were napkins on the table to ensuring that our water glasses aren't empty for a long time, are what sets good restaurants apart from great restaurants. And the low point of the evening was when we had to send dessert back. This is going to sound weird, but the dessert definitely had a very salty/fishy taste to it. After the waitress took the dessert away, she came back and said that she had discussed it with the pastry chef, and that the problem must have been that we both had fish for our main course. I sort of laughed this off, but when I thought about it later, if the dessert had tasted funny because of the main course fish, then there must have been something VERY wrong with the main course fish. We also found the decor at Bish to be a bit boring and the area we were seated in was WAY too dark. Needless to say, we won't be returning.
Thanks again for all of your tips and suggestions. I'll be back again in a few weeks and hope to try Gio's, Da Maurizio (I know its the same owners as Bish), Ryan Duffys, Press Gang, Five Fishermen and Cut.
