Help Me with a "70's Funk" Party Theme
I was inspired by a post on potluck themes, and I wanted to add something I've been considering for a while:
>>
I want to do a "70's Funk" music party, getting foods that reflect great songs or artists of the time. They don't necessarily have to be typical of the "70's" kind of food, though.
First off the bat: The Ohio Players "Fire" FI-YURR! unh-unh. <cue to grill some foods>.
Then, "Funky Nassau" to cue up some conch fritters...
Of course, where would we be without the unequalled James Brown, maybe "Papa's Got a Brand New Bag" -- to cue up some fish en papillote?
Parliament Funkadelic? http://musicalstewdaily.files.wordpre... inspires some wild jello salad with spiky carrots and celery inside ;-).
~~~~~~~
What would be your ideas for the party? Name a song or artist and the food or technique that you suggest as the proper homage. I know you all are creative, so... GET FUNKY, y'all!
This one's apropos, but b-a-a-a-d, I just couldn't resist.
I hate to see this party stop...how 'bout we STOMP some grapes to make wine while we groove to s'more Brothers Johnson? :)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tPBDMihPRJA&ob=av2n"Ain't we funkin' now? Yeahhhh...uh-huh!"
re: kattyeyes
miss kat, groove on over to the big vat o' grapes, hike'st up yore skirt, and start stompin'. <your feet are perfectly clean, i'm sure>. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tw0D-R...
~~~~~~
i'm assured many places making wine still do it the old-fashioned way.

Jello shots and "Glide" from Pleasure (I thought it was Slave, too, who knew?). I'll be extra creative with 'em, too, 'cause a tune this funky deserves nothing less!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3q3PsoWbW9IThen we can serve up some chow fun so we can bring Confunkshun ("Ffun") to the party. YEAHHHH!

re: alkapal
WOOHOO! And since you brought Cameo (I was holding back 'cause it's 80s), how 'bout some "Candy" to pass out as favors when our guests leave? I can make those yummy zen bites amyzan taught me last year.

re: Cheese Boy
how in the world could we have neglected funky chicken?!?!? we need to serve funky chicken stew!
i mean i can still dance the funky chicken (if i had to in order to escape from a prison camp, or something...). here's my man, the great james brown, the godfather of soul, demonstrating: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zdz88M...

Gotta get Rick James to the party again (besides those MJ brownies!), so let's have "Cold Blood(ed)" Sausages:

And if we have Rick, we've gotta have Teena Marie, so how 'bout some Pillsbury crescent rolls for a little "I Need Your Lovin' (from the oven)"

re: alkapal
I know, hello, and THIS kat was going back to disco?! ;) Chiggity-check yo'self...I thought we were "One Nation Under a Groove" at this party. Y'know, gettin' down just for the funk of it. Though I completely dig Ice Cube's newer riff on this, I can't think of a dish to go with. Can you, alkasis? Nothin' can stop us now...
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ztJ23v...Rmis32, too funny with Rufus!

re: Rmis32
oh gosh, that look ka (apple) py py song has been used so many ways, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jeqJHajT5RY&feature=related
from the "chick a wowow" aspect, to the bass line, which i swear was stolen to make the soundtrack for "live and let die." thanks for bringing the meters to the party.maceo parker -- in california in september and florida in november -- on a big tour! http://maceoparker.com/itinerary.html maybe he'll stop in the "pass the peas" at our party.

Forgive me for posting a dirty recipe--I've never actually eaten this stuff, but am sure we can clean it up for the party:
The Whatnauts, "Hamburger Help(er) Is on the Way"
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zgF3Q6rAWYQ&playnext=1&videos=ADIG5Dxvy2IAnd how did I forget The J.B.'s "Pass the Peas"--let's make 'em as soup with lemon cream as I did recently.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wwnj9yAMOls&playnext=1&videos=vqkv6jQ6IF4One last thought--though this is early 80s--no matter what's served, I know this party's gonna be, as The Gap Band would sing, "Outstanding." CLASSIC!

re: rHairing
ok, rHairing, we'll cut you some slack since you were a baby during the great funk era, but...
how in the heck did you put PRINCE into the mix, and then on top of that, with "when doves cry?" i think that you may need some remedial funk education. in fact, i'm sure of it. ;-). but look on the bright side, you won't be alone in class.

Let us not forget Parliament: "Chocolate City" - maybe chocolate fountain?
Average White Band: "Cut the Cake" - any kind, maybe dipped in the fountain!
The Bar-Kays: "Too Hot to Stop - spicy chicken wings or jalapeno poppers
Sly & The Family Stone: "You Can Make it if You Try" - a build your own whatever bar
And a chilly drink of some sort named the "Cold Sweat" - James Brown
ETA - I was trying to come up with something for "Superfly" but nothing came to me...
