Blue Sky Oil and Vinegar, Chapel Hill

  • 2

I vaguely recall someone asking about this place awhile back but I can't find the original post, so I'll just start a new one.

I went a couple days ago - it's a store devoted to oils and vinegars which opened at the end of June in the Galleria, across from the shopping center that has Whole Foods and 3Cups.

They have flavored and unflavored vinegars, plain and fused/infused olive oils, and black truffle oil. I tried some of both and was very impressed with the vinegars. They carry plain balsamic that's been aged for 18 years and is *absolutely delicious.* If you are in the area, go over and try some. I purchased some of that, along with a cinnamon and pear balsamic that I plan to use with the peaches and apples I purchased at the farmer's market this weekend.

I also got some Spanish extra-virgin olive oil that I thought would pair well with the balsamic for dressings. There were also Tunisian, California and Italian extra-virgin oils to try.

I wasn't real excited by the fused lemon and lime oils they had - I'd been planning on get some lemon if I liked it - but the flavor was too subtle for my use. If you want just a touch of citrus in the oil, you might like it.

You can purchase glass bottles of any item - there are 375 ml. and 200 ml. bottles, or you can get 4 100 ml. sampler bottles for $36. Most of the items are $14.95 for the 375 ml. and $9.95 for 200 ml. If you bring your empty bottles back you get $1 off your next purchase.

The proprietor told me they planned to get even more new items in the next couple weeks, so there will be even more to try. They have a web site, and you can purchase online - you can also get an idea of the kinds of things they carry:

  1. Looks like the kind of place where you could drop a few dollars. I'll have to give it a try sometime.

Speaking of price, I see I made a typo - the set of 4 sampler bottles is only $26, NOT $36!

That said, I made some baked peaches today and drizzled some of the cinnamon/pear flavored balsamic over them. SO. GOOD. Totally worth the $.
